gti-6 brake conversion problems........... HELP!

  1. #1
Tried to fit my gti-6 brake conversion today, but struggled.

When i fitted the disc, then the caliper over the top of it, i found that the disc was touching the carrier on one side and there was a good half a inch of room on the other side. I ordered 306 GTI-6 discs, so why is this the case, should i have ordered a different type of disc?

sorry if its confusing, but the pro's will know what i mean
  2. #2
    u got standard calipers on?
  3. #3
Sounds correct to me. If you've got 306 GTI calipers, you'll need 306 GTI disks!

Can you take any pics? Sounds very wierd to me.
  4. #4
    correct carriers?

no, can't take any pics now. as i've put it all back together, only thing i can think of, is they must have sent me the wrong discs!!

anyone know the exact measurements of the gti-6 discs?

yes, they were, i only took them off/loosened them when i removed them from the car after discovering they didn't comply with the disc!
  23. #23
look same as mine, so have no idea, did you measure the disc? is it same width? ive just changed pads on mine today

was the piston all the way in?

or the sliders all the way on?

still cant understand why you would have a gap

do you have the correct pads? theres 2 different pads for them

i didn't even get as far as the pads, as the carriers were touching the disc!

yes piston was compressed all the way in, and slider bolts were tight mate!

    im baffeled!
  25. #25
has it had the bit grinded off yet? not that that should do anything to effect it

im lookin at it and i still cant see why it wouldnt fit on properly, got them on the right way and not upside down?!
  26. #26
yeah, we got the grinder out and showed it who the boss was. LMAO YES it was the right way round, im not that much of a fucktard!

well maybe at times i am!
  27. #27
just dont understand why its not fittin mate lol

have you been able to compare it to anyone elses gti 6 calipers?

where did you get the brakes from?

bought the calipers, carriers and pads from mrtuck16V! not had chance to compare them to anyone elses as i don't know anyone who has them!

can only suggest bringin them to trax if your goin i dont mind gettin wheel off to compare

    did he have them fitted?

i'm really not sure mate, didn't ask him tbh.

I was hoping to get them sorted for Trax as i'll be needing them on track!

but thanks very much for your help Matt!
  31. #31
fit them in the car park! just get some fluid job done lol
  32. #32
S34mers, your brakes look like the ones that I got when I got my 283mm setup. The seller sent me other ones that fit and they look like the ones in yates' picture. Notice the lines on the back of the piston, like fins. I would guess that yates' are bosch and the ones you have are lucas' ( I know that from the pic and the ones that didn't fit were also lucas')

First set that was never going to fit

Second set that fitted spot on, no grinding or anything

  33. #33
if there 406 283mm calipers and carriers then they wont fit and will hit the disk at an angle, the reason for this is the 406 283mm calipers are the same as the gti6 but the carriers are completly different. it looks like 406 ones in that top pic
  34. #34
Notorious CAT your right yeah, they are Lucas ones, they have Lucas on the side! what does this mean then? does this mean they are 406 calipers as Stevenet15 suggested!?
  35. #35
If they are then sourceing 306 carriers would be the way forward? and all problems solved
  36. #36
Not sure about what car they are from buddy to be honest. But if you look at my pictures of the 2 different carriers one is like a smooth curve near where the bolts go in, and the others ones (the lucas ones that didn't fit) have a straight edge, then another straight edge.

Where did you get them from? If it was online any links?

But I think you could just get new carriers for the caliper. But I'm not totally sure about that, never took them both apart and had a play about by swapping parts on the 2 sets. So get someone to confirm whether or not that possible before you buy!
  37. #37
the carriers are very expensive £95 a side iirc and there very hard to find seperatly on ebay etc... so might be better to jsut buy some gti6 calipers with carriers and sell your ones on, i am almost positive there 406 ones

yeah great! thanks, but that doesn't help mate! this is not just an opportunity to post your own pics up!
  42. #42
I would contact him for a refund, or a replacement set.

The guy I bought mine off sorted it no problem since they were never going to work without major messing like.

no 406 discs wont fit there 5 stud on the 283mm ones for the 406 and completly different offset, i am almost certain the ones u have are off a 406 but if there is a part number you could call pug up and see if they can confirm it

you mean here's one i did earlier
  44. #44
I'm with Steve on this one here.

As even if you got the 406 disks to somehow fit, just try line up the carriers against the bolt holes on the strutt, and you will notice the angle they would sit at shows they just wouldn't work.
  45. #45
i know that mine didnt have lucas on, which could mean yours are 406 ones, i read other day sayin they bought the lucas ones which i wasnt sure on

bummer if they are 406 ones, have to see if you can get money back
  46. #46
i've pm'd him to ask for a refund, so we'll see what mrtuck16V says!?
  47. #47
    Refund given straight away
  48. #48
was just about to say, you have been very understanding about the whole thing, In actual fact i don't think it was Paul's (mrtuck16V) fault at all!

he aquired them from a scrap yard with the understanding they were gti-6 brakes, and they gave him the wrong ones. this chap has an excellent attitude, and was more than happy to refund the money straight away!

I'd most certainly recommend him in future!!
  49. #49
least thats all sorted, obv if you just have calipers cant be that easy to tell
  50. #50
glad to see things are sorted, have you got a set of calipers then?
  51. #51
Good to see it's all sorted now.

Yates, what size master cylinder do you use?
