Problem??

On my VTR when i brake hard in a straight line the rear end of the car seems to jump sideways to the left. Has anyone else experienced this?
  2. #2
I openly admit i don't know why, but it sounds like one side is breaking harder than the other!

Thats exactly what i was thinking, do you think it may be anything to do with that valve that changes the power of the rears breaking when its under load, the valve that need altering after a car has been lowered.

get the car to an mot station and put it on the brake tester, will show which one, if any, brakes are braking harder than the others. If so, then you know which corner to look at for the cause. If not, its something else.

are you sure that you're tracking isn't out? I'd get that checked first.

could also be a caliper piston sticking on....

Well i recently changed all my discs and pads, hopefulli i havent knackered it. Will get it to a garage tonight to get it looked at. I dont think that the tracking is out as the car drives straight when i am on the motorway etc. Also i hadnt changed the rear discs and pads and it was doing it then. Any more ideas

Sounds brakes related to me mate - if the car drives straight when not braking then it's definitely not going to be tracking.

Should be fairly easy to fix though if the caliper is sticking on.

    How do you fix it?

sounds like a caliper problem for sure.. one side is probably not working correctly meaning the opposite side is braking harder.

Needs a strip down and rebuild..

    What he said!

Although a quick fix is to take the pads out, use some "big grips" (massive pliers basically) to push the piston back and then put it all back together - I must say that it's only a short term measure to get the caliper piston moving again and you should get it properly fixed (stripped down etc.. or fit a new pair at the back to keep it all equal) asap.

The brakes are the most important part of any car...

Please dont advise somebody to use "big grips" to push the piston back into the caliper , its totally incorrect ...
You have to turn the piston back into the body to retract the piston , been covered loads of times before

you gota wind caliper pistons back in !!!!!not just squeese ,then push pistons out with presure before aplying handbrake or will not work correctly.
    hope this helps

Yes sorry guys - I have to admit it's been a few years since I last went anywhere near Saxo calipers - as an ex-Citroen mechanic I should know better shouldn't I!?

I noticed that my car pulls slightly to the left when braking. Wouldn't be the tracking cos it wouldn't drive straight when not braking and I had it checked at kwik fit recently

mine was seized up if you take ur passenger rear wheel off you can see the valve get some one to press the break and see if it moves if it does might wan t adjusting if seized up get somthing like plus gas spray up well and use a bar lever to keep working it till it is free when mine was lowered i had to play bout with it as the back end kept biting to hard and then had so adjust when i put my green stuff pads and disc on

Well i got under the car and oiled it all up today and got it moving again. Then i went for a test drive - suprise suprise it was still jumping to the left under heavy braking. Went and washed the car and filled my tyre up on the front left with air as it has a slow puncture. Drove home and tried braking again and it was straight as a die.

as previously stated/sugested go to mot station and get it on thr brake testing rollers, that will indicate if its a problem with your brakes, mabe a siezed caliper or mabe just the sliders, or possibly just need bleeding correctly.
other things that could cause your car to pull are un even tyre wear, ie one side of the car has say 6mm tread and the other side has 2mm this would cause the car to behave strange when braking and driving.
or worn suspension componants, a weak shocker on one side will cause the car to dip more @ that side when braking, as will worn ball joints, lower arm bushes etc.
hope this gives you an idea of what to check next.
