1.4 Gearbox Problem

  1. #1
Ok, so I have a Saxo VSX P reg 1.4i and, oh yay, the gearbox has just gone

And I was wondering if I could slam a 1600cc VTR or VTS box in it as I am having a little bit of trouble finding a 1400cc gearbox. Or even somthing lower like a 1100cc or even a 1000cc .

If it is even remotely possible what differences would it make to the cars behaviour? Like acceleration, top end speed and whatever...

im sure you can use a vtr box mate but i think that the power lower down will be affected. your best bet is to wait until some of the people come online that are at trax and they will be able to give you a definate answer.

    or PM Toad or williamsvts

    Thanks mate

You can put a vtr box on mate, only difference between the 1.4 and vtr box's r that the vtr will have a longer rev range in 1st and 2nd (lower ratio). just a straight swap mate.hope this helps

VTR box is almost exactly the same as the 1.4… doubt you will notice any difference. The 1.1s the same as the 1.0 but I’d stay away from them otherwise any other box would be a plus.

Some of the speeds for a few boxes at 6250rpm so you can see the difference…

    954 and 1124cc petrol

    1st 28.1mph
    2nd 53.1mph
    3rd 75.3mph
    4th 93.6mph
    5th 125.2mph

    1.4

    1st 29.9mph
    2nd 55.8mph
    3rd 85.3mph
    4th 106.1mph
    5th 142.0mph

    VTR

    1st 31.4mph
    2nd 60.2mph
    3rd 85.3mph
    4th 106.1mph
    5th 142.0mph

    VTS

    1st 30.0mph
    2nd 53.4mph
    3rd 76.5mph
    4th 99.1mph
    5th 122.5mph

These are calculated from the gear ratios in the Haynes manual and are more or less the actual speed you will be going at 6250rpm rather than the indicated speed which is out by a bit.

I’ve got a spreadsheet with all the boxes I know of so just give me a shout if you want any more.

Oh and I was also wndering if age matters, for example if I pull a gearbox out of a 2001 or onwards or any other age Sax would it fit in my 1996 Sax?

yes you can put a vtr box in but you will need the correct vrt shafts to go with the box, as your 1400 will not fit the diff correctly

That’s the first I’ve heard of that… I thought they were all the same at the box end? I thought only a few varied where they connected to the hubs? If that’s the case… which ones are compatible with which shafts?
