do i want 16v?

    hi i currently have a mk1 vtr and am thinking of makin it into a track and fast road toy. question is do i keep the vtr engine n mod that or convert to a vts engine?? are the mounts the same?? .

    engine mod list wud be:-

    ported head
    raceland 4-2-1 mani
    pugsport or magnex exhaust
    raceland n green induction
    270deg cam
    high pressure fuel reg
    and other tweeks here and there

    p.s the current engine (vtr) is at 130,000 miles and sounds like it needs a cam change.

    any advise wud be awsom.

    just bought a vts engine for mine mate its the way forward its just not worth tuning the vtr engine because it will cost you miles more and especially not an engine with 130,000 miles on it lol!!!

    Sounds good..

    Similar to what iam doing..My car is stripped right out etc already and has all the competition sus etc done so i'm just building an engine as we speak..

    The mounts are the same on the R and the S but its upto you whether you change engines or not..Alot of people will recommend you to go with the 16v engine but just do what you want..

    Personally i have decided to stay with the 8v..

    Mileage makes no difference..

    He will be replacing alot of the parts in the head when he cams it, so the wearing parts in the head be re-newed and as for the bottom end, if the car isn't smoking or knocking then its fine..

    Leave the 8v simply because it has already doen 130,000 miles and it wouldnt be worth stressing it by tuning it and there us no telling how much longer it would last,

    He may not replace a lot of parts in the head, He has put a 270deg cam which I assume is reffering to the piper one which is only mild and would not require a lot of the parts changing. If he didnt want to, and looking at the list I think this looks like a car done on a budget unlike yours lol.

    He should replace the valve springs and valves while its being cammed though tbh..

    ye as you say james i no knoking or smokin jst a bit noisy am 90%sure this is cam shaft though which i will defenatly change if it is kept.

    even if the block gave up on me i would buy another vtr engine n swap everythin over.

    if it bolts straight in then is very tempting, jst alot of hassle realy and have not got to much room to work with hummm....

    think am swayin more to vtr atm, cheaper to buy if all goes nasty aswell.

    what other mods would you reconmend?

    o n not sure on cost yet will not be done all at once, jst spend the wages on her lol.

    i dont want to go to over the top with cams as i will be using it on the road a bit and have herd it will not pass mot with anythin lairyer with out a cat??

    Get a lighter flywheel too..About £60 they are and that will make a difference in performance..

    If you had 40k on the r engine I would say keep it... it's not worth the transplant.

    If your talking about replacing the engine anyway because of it's age then you might as well stick an S in there.. they will cost around the same anyway i'd imagine.

    its more economical to put a 16v in IF your wanting big power and keeping it normaly aspirated.

    if you are doing the work yourself, you can get a mint 16v engine for 500-750 and fit it yourself for free.

    cam + head etc... will come in that region to + then mapping on top for slightly less performance.

    Thats what i'm trying to with my 1400 engine but getting nowhere tbh..every time i get some money together a random bill comes along..

    ye that probs the way forward, tune it on the bench. gonna be a bit of a jump goin from standard 8v to tuned 16v lol!! cheers for the replys guys

    all depends on the budget. Yes a VTS can get bigger power but if your budget is only say £800 then you can make a VTR faster than a standard VTS.

    Planning on spending money on the engine over a longer period of time then a VTS conversion starts to make sense

    money will defenatly be spent over time, i think i will swop jst had a drive in her and the gearbox is sounding a little 'not so new' now anyway. while i am on the subject of gearboxes is the vtr lower geared than the vts and does it fit straight on? (ive not got much experience with tuning saxos as you may tell) and may aim for a lower geared box and have more fun roung the twisty lanes.

    All boxes interchangable, VTS is lower FD so better for acceleration.
