My car has gone loopy!

Can anyone help with a running problem? My 97 saxo 1.4 has started stalling every time I put my foot on the clutch or it revvs really high (2500 ish rpm) with my foot on the clutch at other times. When I first start the engine it takes a few seconds of chugging before the needle slowly stabilises at about 1000rpm but if I rev it and quickly take my foot off it will immediately stall. I can also smell an unburnt fuel smell outside the car. The local garage fitted a new temperature sensor and told me the car was fine. But it started stalling again almost straight away. The last owner put a K&N filter in if that is relevent.
I am trying to fix the car to sell so I can get a new one and dont want to pay a garage to replace every single part until they find the right one.

Any ideas would be greatfully recieved.

the K&N is messing up the air fuel ratio causing it to stall and splutter, have you noticed a increase in fuel consumption? al you need to do is get it remapped for the new set up, or revert back to a standard filter

Fuel consumption seems ok but I tend to to lots of short trips which might make it harder to tell. Will probably change back to original set up to sell. Thanks for advice.

id bet my balls on it that it isnt the air filter.you dont need a remap for an air filter.

when did you service it last?how many miles you done?

id start with a service and work from there
