Back Plates (whoops, should be in probs & queries)

   are the back plates on the rear brakes needed?
   
   every now and then they seem to make a clang/knock noise (may not be they) but sounds like thin metal, could be back box or heatsheild tho i guess.
   
   but if it is the back plates, is it ok to remove them and leave them off?

   dont think its the backplates, check the bearings in the swingarm,
   tinny rattle might be heatshield easy enough to check
