Gearbox crunches when cold

  1. #1
It will only do it going from 2nd to 3rd but not 4th to 3rd, which is quite odd. Also once is has warmed up, it seems like it doesn't want to go into gear when I change up or down at a normal gear changing speed lol but when I change gear quite fast it seems to be fine. Setting off I am not having to revv the car a lot to get it moving and it doesn't slip out of gear. It has now done 90k miles, so will it require a rebuild?? Or just have the syncros/gear linkages looked at?

    Rep will be given

May be the oil. It sounds like it as when the gearbox heats up the oil spreads more thinly so if you dont have enough it will spread very thin making it hard to get in gear as it isnt lubricated properly.

    Like your Sig Vince..

Umm, most of them will crunch and be clunky when the engine is cold because the gearbox oil is also cold etc and takes abit of time for it to heat up..

As for when its all warm and its getting stiff etc, get it looked at..Could be time for a new gearbox..

Or as said above, top the oil up/change it..

A sign of linkages been worn is play in the gearstick, also get under the car and check that none have popped out and that there isnt much movement that shouldnt be there.

And synchros I dont have a clue tbh.

Ahhh yea didn't think of that. Where is the drain plug for the oil on a gearbox?

Haha, I thought you might like it bud .

Yea true. But there is crunching and then there is CRUNCHING. Mine is the CRUNCHING, which is abit wank.

Hmmm... I may have a quick look for a XSI box or if not a 1.1 .

At the bottom of the box..Areound the area that the driveshaft comes out..

Get a garage to do it mate, wont be much and just saves having to lie down on a fuking wet floor..lol

Hmm..An oil change may do the trick..

I didnt think the 1.1 box's made much difference..

XSI box is the one you want!

My car will be up on ramps when the trackrod ends get done, so I may as well kill two birds with one stone and get the oil changed in the box. If that doesn't help, then XSI box or just save my money for the Berlingo haha

Remove the gearstick gaitor, remove the surround thing with the window buttons in. You have to pop the buttons out. Then you will see 4 torx screws or bolts (cant remember which)holding a white plate down that the gearstick goes into. loosen these but do not remove them completely and lift the white plate up but not off and spray some oil around underneath it.

My saxo VTR is crunching and griding when i pull away in 1st and 2nd gear. i think it may be time for a new box also. Does the XSI box go strait in. also what one do i get. What size engine does it have to come from!
