Octane booster

  1. #1
hi, i was thinking about using octane booster in my vtr. I have so far only herd bad things about the stuff but am confused as to why a higher octane will damage the engine when higher octane petrol improves the car. I am considering buyin the nos octane booster. any thoughts or opinions?

it does fuck all difference imo, for the price just stick v-power in < least thats a good decent fuel rather than a halfrauds special

cheers mate. i was speaking to the guy who set up the rs4 organisation and said he used to use some illegal stuff that he cant get a hold of anymore and he put it in my auntes mk1 vtr and she wrote it off so ive been trying to find some stuff that does that

which is just as useless in a saxo engine.

I am confused... You want an additive to put into your engine, so you can write it off??

read the bottle it says it will increase your power by 8 points. but its point 8
you might as well piss in your tank lol.

which is the same price as unleaded up here so mayswel put it in at 91.9p a ltr
and contains cleaning addatives, i agree will make sod all difference in a saxo engine but will be better than wasting money on ocatane booster.

I didnt notice a difference with v-power till second tank, car seemed to run smoother that was it. (which is a gain imo)

shell fuel in general i think my car runs better, just the average unleaded, compared to the supermarket shit. Its all the same but i know how my car runs and it does seem to run better on shell fuel, it ran very nice on total unleaded but its more expensive than v-power up here.

in the vts handbook it recommends using 97/98 ron....

Most jap jap cars (Evo's, Skyline's yum yum etc) only run on Premium fuel with the higher RON or octane level in them

Saxo's dont need anywhere near this to run on but it doesnt do anyharm to flush the system out every so often with some decent fuel sometimes fella

Dont slash your money away on Octane boosters like Redex or Nos and that as said above they are pap, like in my other post just keep her well serviced and try to use good fuel when you can and stay away from Tesco's or supermarkets

Shell and BP are what i always use

Steve - 91.9/L? ours is more like 95/6

lol shell have been doing offers where v-power is same price as there unleaded for a day etc
atm normal shell unleaded is 92.9p but total and bp 98.9
tesco is normally a penny more than shell as wel

Won't see much of a difference using additives on a saxo

There's a few things you need to consider when choosing the fuel you want to run in your car. I need to be careful here, or this could be a LONG comment.

Basically, here's some main things... :

    1) The quality of the fuel
    2) The amount of energy that is released when the fuel is combusted
and finally 3) The RON rating.

Some fuels will give off a higher amount of energy during combustion, and this will straight away make a difference. The higher priced "super" unleaded fuels tend to do this, but it's no given.

Without going into a lot of depth, the RON rating is important too. But if the engine is designed to run on a lower RON rated fuel, it won't make any odds by using a higher one. The higher RON rated fuel is less combustable, and as a result, engines with grater compression ratios will need them, as the lower RON rated fuel will cause pre-detonation, or pinking. This is where the fuel spontaniously combusts (due to the pressure of the air / fuel mixture) prior to the spark coming from the plug.

well the higher the octane the bigger the bang

i have used some of my bosses octane dyno booster tablets and i garantiy YOU WILL see a difference, throttle repsones is better and revs round alot smoother

and no its not just warp speed mode just makes it bit more reponsive

try em bet you will notice them

Redex is a good product, i've used it on my old car (a 96' fiesta) when the engine was running a bit rough and it sorted it out pretty well... I put a shot in my VTR this week and its definitely been running smoother i'd say, it idles perfectly...

Haven't heard of using Redex to "boost" performance - didn't realise it was that type of product, or claimed to be?

the higher the octane does not give your engine more power.so dont think you can just out a higher octane in and get extra power.

Used some a few weeks ago aswell lol but for £5+ a bottle the comments about them were said to mean that spending money on better fuel rather than just dropping a splash of that in will be better

Does sometimes help to use Redex when the cars feeling a bit rough and i noticed my idle and throttle response was a bit smoother

Do some research mate, that's absolute crap. The octane rating does not relate to the amount of energy released during combustion. In fact, the higher RON rated fuel is actually less combustable than lower rated. Read my previous post...
