Knocking front suspension

  1. #1
Ever since I had the car lowered 40mm its developed a knock which seems to come from the front left, only happens at around 15-30mph and is not dependent on steering input or been on and off the throttle. It sounds like a hollow metal knocking noise and is now beginning to drive me mad, has anyone else had this problem and how did you fix it?

take it to your local garage and get them to check all you ball joints and bush's

lowered suspension can also cause damage to track rod ends and wheel alignment.

Had the tracking done today and the garage that lowered it says they cant find anything loose but there is something deffinately not right.

I askes if they'd needed to move the power streering pipe and they said no - could this be causing the knocking? Has anyone got pictures of the pipe and how far it needs moving?

a mate of mine has a VTR with the same (passenger side knocking) funny enough his is lowered 40mm on spax and creakes when turning left around 15mph. do you have the adjustables? maybe its a fault with the model? have you had a good look to make sure the springs are in the cup correctly with no gaps between cup stops?

Yeah SPAX PSX adjustables, only happens over bumps, cant see much under the car as I dont have ramps or a jack

I had the same sort of noise from my passenger side. Brought a pair of drop links off ebay, replaced them and it sorted my problem. Dunno if it is the same problem as yours.

........erm........you dont have a jack? lets hope you dont get a puncher then! sounds like there is a fault with ur shocks mate. has it done it ever since u had them? tried changing the dampen rate then driving it?

Could be driveshaft my saxo is down 60mm and it has had alot of driveshaft trouble with knocking noises. The CV(constant Velocity joint) could have came away from the joint and leaking grease causing a knocking noise. The Short Shaft (left hand side) are quite bad for going on 106/Saxo's

suspension bearing?? did u replace it when you put ur new set up on as myn have gone and clunk and go wont get doen till i lower it.

my psx have the same trouble i think there my be a slight gap in the inserts! iv had mine on the ramp many of times checking the joints but never find anythin! as long as nothing falls off thats the main thing!lol

I had this noise when I got mine fitted (same make!) and the noise got worse. Turned out it was a dry bearing which was causing the shock to unscrew itself.

Had the same clunking sound a few weeks ago, but only when i turned the wheel left or right.

this was my cv joints so id recommend asking the garage to check those! as they can seize or be worn out.

I have the jack that came with the car but dont wanna climb underneath with it supported by that and nothing else.
The kit has only been on a few weeks and has done it since being fitted. Its on its softest setting at the moment I daren't make it stiffer as I dont want to break anything cause it sounds pretty bad to me. Something knocking against something else.... but what?

*Gave it 4 turns on the front shocks - drove home and seemed to have improved it but will find out tomorow for sure.....

yes maybe the shock hasnt been set correctly. i would've thought adjusting it a bit at a time until ur happy its gone is best option. regarding adjusting the shock, dont worry, nothing will break, thats what adjustable means, they're meant to be like that

I dont think it can be set incorrectly... it was on its softest setting though and didnt want to make it worse by stiffening the dampers. It still knocks but only over bigger holes now which I dont think is a good thing... I might give it four more turns and see what that does - if it doesnt go then its going back to the garage. Power steering seems to be whining now I sound lucky dont I!!!!
