wheel refurb, paint?

to save a few quid, im going to re-furb my wheels myself..

is 'normal' tin can spray paint okay?, as ive seen that 'Hammerite' now do 'Spray Paint', decent stuff?

and ive seen all these 'Industrial Strength' Lacquers...

i want them perfect, i know with Metallic paints every defect shows up.

is it worth paying 8quid a can... or are cheap-o 2 quid cans just as good?

Pay the extra... But they can still show imperfections if you don't prep them right.

Ask Jungle_Jim or FurioAL they will be able to help.

with wheels u have to rememebr there very close to the road and are gona see stones etc... lots of alloys are painted using powder coating, this is a special powder based paint with colouring agents, resins, and additives that are applied to the parts and then heat baked in an oven which gives a very good strong finish, It not realy something u can do at home easy either. Using normal rattle can spray paints can give great results, make sure u primer, secondary (colour coat) then laquer them. Make sure your not tight with the paint especially the laquer atleast giving a good 4 coats of it as this is helps make the final surface and finish strong and less likely to get stone chips etc.... I have dont quite a few sets of wheels and i did all mine with spray cans and even a few years later there still looking brilliant. normally costs me around £50 in paint to do a whole set of alloys so i save a bit rememebr u can get them done professionally for £25 a wheel (depending on wheel size). If the wheels you are refirbing have kirbs smooth them out as best u can and use chemical metal to fill any imperfections

here is some i have done in the past with spray cans:

    Audi alumimium silver

    Rover charcole grey

Near enough the same as Authancite (sp).

Aslong as you prep the wheel... Spraying is fine, but again, advise to do inside not out, cause when you spray the laquer on, if anything flys on it, it's fucked and you have to do it again.(If you want it perfect)

There is a lot of prep work involved in refurbing wheels.. even if they aren't that curbed.... the surface has to be perfect before you even consider painting them...

I wrote a how to guide here:
