can be annoying to get off, easiest method:

    -find an old screwdriver
-use hammer to wack it in
-use hammer on screwdriver to turn it round

Its easier and alot quicker, but if ur not gonna get rid of the filter use a belt, tie the end round it and pull up throu the bonnet and should turn and come off.

Will this not run the risk of metal shards going into the engine though?

Have never had a problem removing one of these, they are big, chunky, comfortable to hold & minimal risk of it coming loose & you cracking your knuckles off something!

If you aint strong enough to turn it by hand, get your mum/sister/girlfriend to do it for you, or as has been mentioned you could try with an oil filter wrench

Filters easy to remove as long as the last person to replace it lubed it up and only tightened it by hand. Buy an oil filter wrench too, think mine was about £4 from halfords, its better and easier than bashing a screwdriver through it.

id recommend an oil filter removing tool m8 also have the engine slightly warm it helps drain the oil alot quicker if its warm

I just whack in a screwdriver to remove the old one as well.

Like someone said, before you start give the engine a little run to help it drain quicker.

Also once you have drained the oil from the sump plug, I put a few holes in the oil filter to help drain it from that, then whack through the screwdriver to remove it. Just helps stop it dripping all over the place once you remove the oil filter.
