Removing Gear Linkages ?

  1. #1
    Hi...
im just on changing my gear linkages, i got the long 1 off and one short 1, but i cant seem to get the bottom 1 off. the inside of the linkage is still stuck on the ball joint. any ideas how to get this off ?
  2. #2
Try getting an open ended spanner round it to lever it off?
  3. #3
as above use that or if you can afford some ball joint seperators get some, not sure if they do a small version of them

Cheers for the suggestions people, got it off with a set of molegrips
  5. #5
so for the hi jack, but what are the benefits to changing your gear linkages???
  6. #6
better gear change mainly. when they are badly worn they can cause the car to jump ouf of gear also they can fall off leaving u with no gears

this also affect the "wobble" on the gear stick? in neutral mine wobbles all over the place and also when its in gear. If it is is it easy to do?

Just put mine on from the group buy today. They fitted perfectly, wasnt a very hard job, hardest bit was popping the old ones off. It can help stop the wobble, made my gear changes smoother and easier.

Lol Yesterday my gear links came loose leaving me with no gears, it was a bastrd firstly just 2nd gear was awkward to get in but a few mins later no gears at all and i was 15 miles from home, i managed to hand tighten the link that was loose and carefully drive back home, a few mins before i got home i lost 1st and 2nd gear, i had to pull off in 3rd gear uphill which didn't sound too healthy, i think my links are seriously worn, I'm going to buy some new link me thinks I've herd alot of good things about replacing them while I'm at it I'm deffo getting new clutch as my bearings are grinding and first gear grinds every time unless you have 0 revs
  12. #12
^^ my clutch does that aswell mate but i thought it was more the gear box than anything
  13. #13
I dunno, saxo gearboxes are quite shit as I've heard, i dunno whether its the actual gear box that is shite or the gear links but my clutch deffo needs looking at i think cos soon as i press down the clutch the grinding stops and with the combo of my dogey gear link i think its caused my 1st gear to b if anyone else has any other ideas of what it is then it would b appreciated as it would save me some money gear link is deffo one of the problems as its really loose, I'm going to replace my gear link anyway to some that have lock nuts on the ball joint ends and pin lock style clips to stop the rods popping off
  14. #14
^^ its the rose joint ones you want then, they have locking bolts on them i think.

as for that noise its your thrust/clutch bearing

wheres the best place to get the gear linkages from??
  16. #16

  18. #18
^^^^ i saw them on ebay to, think i may go for it if theres a guide ill do it myself
  19. #19
how do you remove your gear links? i keep meaning to have a go at it but then not bother cos i don't wanna ruin my car lmao, i got a habit for being to confident and then getting pissed off cos i ruined it

i alrediy have some gearlinks like them but all made from stainless steal not just the ends
  22. #22
will these fit a 1.1 cos i need to change mine?
  23. #23
hmm they should do, not to sure tho mate! jus fitted mite in tonite and it did make a slight difference on the wobbly gear stick but mostly on mine i had to tighten a loose bolt below the 2nd link on the right or there abouts, thats what lost me my gears really but yea these links are great
  24. #24
they easy to fit? (can a beginner fit them)
  25. #25
well its simple to fit it just getting the fuckers to come off lol, they pop off a ball joint, no bolts or screws, and there quite hard to access, you should be able to get them off it will just take you a lil longer then expected, it took me and mate about 1-2hours lol, only 3 rods lol!
  26. #26
lol nice, ill give it a go and see how i get on wen i decide to get some.
  27. #27
ok tell me how it goes mate. got any problems with it just ask i found a screwdriver was a good tool to lever them off with and some long grips to pop the new ones on remember clean the balls joints from all dirt and grease and they will last for ever as long as u re-grease them, i used copper grease my next project is a new clutch and quick shift gears lol and that will be it for gear related stuff after that until i can b arsed to get a new gearbox.
