Rev limiter

  1. #1
Ive got a mk2 VTR just wondering if its normal for the rev limiter to kick in at 5,500 revs? just the red starts at 6,500 and seems pretty low

    cheers
  2. #2
    on mine its 6250rpm.

    and ive not touched anything.
  3. #3
Rev limiter should kick in at about 6500 ish like my westie..

Duno why yours is cutting in at 5500..
  4. #4

im running a mk2 vtr engine and mine dont hit the limiter til 6700

if yours is hitting the limiter at 5500 there must be a problem somewhere

and a bad one too cos 5500 is bang on in the middle of where your power band is 6200 is when it starts to drop off or there abouts depending on mods so your losing a fair bit of performance having to shift so low

i would say that rather than the limiter coming in early..
i expect that your rev counter is a bit lazy..

but you cant realy check this unless you have another one that you can rig up.. to see!!

    i rarely go above 4000rpm

is their that much extra power up their then?
  10. #10
    yeah there is
  11. #11
my vtr is 6250 mate like most of em shoule be vts revs higher still between 7250 and 7500!!

I used to be like you buddy lol. I thought there was no power above 4k and then I realised that there is and now I can't stop myself sometimes
  13. #13
5.5K something is wrong with your limiter mate. Dunno if the Saxo has crank speed sensor but could be that on its way out?
Mine limits at just before the red line at like 6250 which is the way i like it but its a bit annoying in a race hehe.
  14. #14
Of course there is power above that..

Max power is 5500 ish on the 8v's..

Redline starts at 6250 and limiters at 6500..
  15. #15
yeah around 5,600rpm is peak on a VTR
  16. #16
ah, poor little 8valvers, i like the extra 1000rpm or so, its great, hahaha

but on another note, if you have access to another rev counter, give that a try and see if its ok then.
  17. #17
The original 8v's were revving to 7000 rpm before the 16v engine was even thought of in the 106 xsi's..

    awesome.

    aren't the S1's high revving 8V's?
  19. #19
Think so yeah, but then emmissions etc came along so the revs were dropped and stuff..

oh right, but if you get an old one then you comply to the rules that were in place for that car.

    love the old revvy S1's.
  21. #21
    Yeah thats right..

Will cam mine soon so will be hitting 7000 rpm..:d

    sweet.

i will be camming mine in the new year, newman PH3 cams, 3500-7500 rpm, yummy.
  23. #23

    Mine will be 2500-7000rpm..:d
  24. #24
aye according to the RR print out my Furio has peak power at 6135 RPM. Not sure exactly where the power band is though. Nor have i hit the limiter so not sure where it is lol but suposidly went to 6600RPM on the RR
  25. #25
Yeah its about 6500 ish the limiter..

Very high revs for the 8v though your max power..Maybe the 1400's are diff than the VTR's..
  26. #26
i remember hearing sumwhere that u can remove the rev limiter on cars in theroery you could rev ur car as high as you want but would have to be aware if you went too high u could blow ur engine just an idea from an episode of scrapheap challenge that stuck in my head
  27. #27
cheers for that guys thought there was something a bit dodgy...not a nice feeling when u dont expect it lol just about throws u through the windscreen
  28. #28
Sure someone's not swapped it for a deezol lump?

No point in doing that as the standard cam will be dropping power if you take the limiter off..Will be revving for no gain at all..

Next time you go out in your car, rev it right out to the limiter in 2nd or whatever and just before it hits the limiter it will stop pulling as hard..

You only need to raise the rev limiter if you are camming your engine with aftermarket items that require higher rpm's to produce their maximum power..
  32. #32
Ok, so all 8v Saxos redline at 6,250, I see that.

You people are saying that your 1360s are reving upto around 6,500 at the limiter? As standard? So my 1,100 should prob rev upto that aswel then? I've never taken it above 6250.
  33. #33
On the 8v's with rev counter's the redline starts at 6250 and on my westie the limiter is at about 6500..
  34. #34
Ok then, ill havw to take the Sax up past 6250 next time im out and running the car for a while and see what it does.

same my west coast limits well into red line 6500 ish
  36. #36
my vtr hits limiter at the start of the redline

dont know if thats normal either.

iv been told putting a 1500 diesel box into your car makes it shift like a good en, not sure if its true though.

haha fair enough. i love it in 3rd it just pulls and pulls. will have a go at 4000 rpm and beyond tomorrow.
  38. #38

Dials on my old Vtr Redline starts at about 6250rpm!
  39. #39
mine hits the limit at 5500 aswel.

    Should it be higher?
  40. #40
Should limiter at about 6500 on the 8v's..
  41. #41
mine does and always has hit the limiter at 6750rpm

all vtr's should go to 6500 easily
  42. #42
Ok, well I took mine upto the limiter today quite gently in 1st gear and it hit it at about 6350ish I say, it went into the red a small amount, then the needle droped quickly to about 6,500 and the front of the car ducked down slightly, I changed to 2nd as soon as that happened, looks like the 1.1 will do about 30mph in 1st gear too.
  43. #43
rit strange i no but i had the same problem after i had to swap my engine as i blew the original one up my limiter on the new engine came in around 5,000 wich was alot lower then normal but me being a mechanic and some one that dont like to hang round quickly got my car hooked up to the computer the reason it hits the limter is a fault wid the crank postion sesoner i dont know what causes it but i no as soon as i fitted a new one my limter was back at 6,500
  44. #44
my saxo only goes to 6250 i'v never seen a vtr go past it unless its had a chip
  45. #45
lol still not got this fixed...

Ive been told that it could be a problem with the ecu? going to have a look at it this weekend

cheers thethorne al have a word with the mechanic about the crank sensor
  46. #46
So at wat point does the engine start to get put under pressure? I have m8 who have bounced of the limiter once and the car went bang. If you want to push a vtr/s should you shift at the peak of 5500 revs?
  47. #47
back in the 6k club lol got it hooked up to a computer and it said its either the ECU, Wiring or crank sensor. Got a new crank sensor as it was the cheapest part and its now working. it actually dropped to 3,900 revs the other week, just one morning when i went to pick my car up from a mates after a heavy nite on the lash, and was unbearable

just thought id let ppl know its worth a try if they are having the same problem
  48. #48
mine hits the limiter around 6,500 just into the red... im assuming my car is running healthy, i rarely take my car about 5,250/5,500 though just hit the power then change up a gear.

5,500 red lined id get that seen too.
  49. #49
bouncing off limiter wont damage the engine, as its designed to stop it revving higher than its able too, its a safety thing to make sure the engine isnt revved to stupid amounts and braking.
