wiring question

my car has guages in it, 3 to be accurate and a push button starter. all of these used to work up until the the car was broken into and cd player etc was stolen . The starter still works but no light on it. the vacum guage works but also no light. the volt meter and the amp meter ( i dont see the sense in haven both both it was bought like that) do not work at all now.
I can only see one wire that is now connected and that is to the dimmer switch. i take it that is for the light fucntion in the guages?? where should the negative be taken from???

where should the volt/amp meter be connected to?????

sorry if its confusing but the car has three amps, loads of in-car neons/ under car neons ,guages ,alarms and a whole halfords store of speakers. Theres that many wires it pickles my head.
if any body has idea it would be much aprreciated

the neons also dont work but ill take it one problem at a time

negative can go to any negative you wish. Positive can technically be taken from anywhere on the car as well

heres the thing. there was also a dvd player wired in there somewhere. theres a box screwd into the drivers foot weld for the dvd player and i think it was olso connected to the old cd player?? just incase the negative came from there
The cd player at the moment only has 2 pre-outs but is hardwired to take 3 amps.
I tried taking a negative of one of the amps but it blew a fuse just before the battery ????? but the lights on the guages worked as they should have. but the sound system didnt work. Im on my last 40 amp fuse so i just disconnected the negaive again. Didnt get any further really

if i take the positvie from any old place the lights for the guage will not come on when the car lights are turned on.???
would the positve not need to come as close to the baterry as possible to get the correct reading on the volt meter?? or will it not matter???

all this has happened when my cousin had the car and he never bothered to get any of them fixed so to tell you the truth im not to sure if the wires were cut or not
