    Saxo

    Hi Guys and Gals,

Could really use some advice, basically my Saxo 99’ S Reg 1.4 WestCoast has caused me no end of problems over the last few months. It all started when the car would no longer idle. I’d start the ignition and it’d drop below 1000 and cut out- this got gradually worse over time- I could drive it if I revved it hard. Took it to the garage and the head gasket had gone. That set me back £500 and everything looked sorted until about 2 weeks later it started cutting out again, whenever I’d slow down at traffic lights/slip roads it’d cut out (sometimes restarting as if a cable were loose) I took it back to the garage who said it was a sensor. The air intake control valve (starter motor) they replaced this and the problem persisted. I can drive down the motorway, through town but if I break/go below 1000 it will cut out. I have also had the problem when I slow down its almost revving itself. http://download.yousendit.com/59BE246173E1B281 ,-- Video of it doing it. literally the rev needle bouncing up and down on its own when I’m stationary. Since then the garage have had the problem for a number of weeks and replaced the back box and the exhaust as he believed it was full of stuff not allowing the fumes to pass through choking the engine casing it to stall. Now the problem has carried on and he has said he believes it to be the catalytic converter. I believe this to be absolute crap as I have replaced it about 6 months ago. My cat was cracked and I replaced it however I was still able to drive it normally (it just sounded like a chav mobile). Therefore I have to ask how this catalytic converter failing could be the cause of it. I believe he knows it’s the part another garage have done so therefore it’s easy to blame on that. Only problem it’s at home and if I get them to replace it on warranty its going to cost me to get it back there. I really need to know what other people think it could be I feel like I have replaced everything on the car and I‘m not spending another penny as I see it its down to the garages to fix it as I’ve paid them shed loads and its down to them to fix the problem. I really really would like to know if anyone’s got any advice to what it could be though as it’s the most frustrating thing in the world and constantly on my mind.

i think the garage have been ripping you off big time head gasket £500 pounds thats daylight robbery and have probably got no idea tbh. sounds like throttle cable is stretch or need adjusting.

could be the cat ,cheap ones are not the best as we tried fitting them and had complaints aftrer 6 months so now use gen ones

Is it possible for the cat to be causing this trouble though because i had driven with a cracked one before and it drove fine? Also could it be the ECU?

I think this will be caused by one of the sensors - almost certain of it, but I dont know enough to tell you which one. Someone on here will tell you.

First of all if it is having trouble idling it is probably the idle contol valve or as potatopete said it could be the sensors. It could be the manifold causing it to stall through the fumes entering the engine bay

Unfortunately it could be a number of things really. Does it do it all the time or just when engine is hot? Might be worth popping it in to citroen for a diagnostics. Something might pop up on their machine

Sounds like the Idle Control Valve to me..

Thing is ive already replaced the control valve and the thing did the same thing again so they put another new one on? So either they've given me two faulties or its got to be something else?? Its so annoying because its going on forever and its a constant thing on my mind. My auntie passed away today and i have to drive back at the weekend stalling in every piece of traffic i come up to on the M6. Really dont need the hassle to be honest. So bloody stressful. Can we rule out the cat because then i can go nuts at this garage once and for all. They say the took it to F1 tuners and they did shed loads of diagnostics on it and the only thing they didnt test was the exhaust so they thing its linked to that- namely the cat- so the garage say anyway. It only really does it when its hot to be honest but then it can behave when its hot for a couple of miles too before going back. I can tell when its going to do it because when i ease off the accelerator it kinda bunny hops.

Could be the coolant temperature sensor.
  12. #12
coolant temp sensor, throttle position sensor, lambda sensor, Leads, Plugs, fuel filter?

£500 for a headgasket is more than what citroen quoted me mate...

Diagnostics don't always pick up faults like this.

The lambda is looking a likely cause. Before you change it though, try cleaning and the MAP sensor (squirt WD40 in it a few times) and the flywheel sensor first.

If it has done 50-60K or more on the original lambda then it will be about due for a change.

Coil pack/plugs/all of the above. Might be a mix.

    few things to try.

lambda would be the first thing to get checked out.

my vts had similar problems and it turned out that the positive on the lambda was shorting out somewhere. needed fresh wiring..

failing that, try the coolant temp sensor, the map sensor, and the icv

citroen diagnostics will pick up most problems, was £30 well spent in my mind when mine was playing up
