Is my engine conversion worth it?

  1. #1
rite, atm i have a VTR... V reg, with the 90bhp silvertop engine in... it has 85k on it, and no service history that i know of, apart from me servicing it myself since iv had it....

i also have a 03 plate VTR which i rolled, but the engine still works on it, and it has 25k on the clock, and has a full service history from new....

only mods to the engine so far is a stainless manifold...

would it be worth me puttin the 03 plate engine into the V reg car, if i am goin to do such things as cams? then i know the engine has been looked after, has few miles on it, and is a good 4 years newer??

just thinkin, coz my mum and dad say they will chip together to buy me a cam kit for my birthday, and i dont wana put them on the engine thats in the car now if it aint gona last long.

    Help and opinions much welcome

oh and also, will the digital dials, with the digal milage and such from the 03 plate go into the V reg?? so it says im back on 25k?? like the white dials so much more

id rather have my saxo tbh.

thats like saying why tune an evo when you can buy a lambo?

its not because of the power alot of people buy saxos. its because of the looks, and tbh, alot of tuned saxos are pretty damn fast, and iv been taught to work with what youve got....

not get rid of what youve got to start again

So why not just get a 16v engine?

because he allready has a VTR engine to hand

if u have the engine already there then id say yea GO for it, but if u can insure a vts conversion id say do that as itll be alot less money and hassle.

sell the newer engine and maybe old engine? and use it to buy a vts engine...
  10. #10
But surely if you sell both engines and save the money off the cam kit and remap thats needed...you could buy a mint S engine.

im only 18 with a years no claims, insurance on a vts is still abit out of range tbh, have to insure my cars full comp around here, alot of cunts who think they are 10 men when they are with mates n find it funny to trash cars.... i keep mine in a garage, but when im in town and leave it in a carpark or something...

but i have the vtr engine to hand, so was wondering how much it would cost to get the engines swapped?

    since im providing the engine??

my mate got a vtr put in his quicksilver in a day?
  12. #12
if it was me id do it.
  13. #13
Check your insurance quote after uve told them about the cam and remap...
  14. #14
check my insurance quote then i dont tell them about the cams and the remap
  15. #15
or just dont tell them....if you crash take cam out put old one in
  16. #16
id rather tune a low milage engine with service history, then a old engine with over 80k on with no service history upto the past 4 months...

so anyone know the cost of swapping a engine?

exatly, if i crash, i can say "well i know fuck all about engines, how do i know if its been modified, i only know how to fill water and oil :/"
  18. #18
Price on engine swap should be about 300 to 400 quid i reckon from a ok garage. Try it yourself...its not that hard tbh.
  19. #19
    thats how i feel mate.
  20. #20
DIY it wont be to hard...if your mechanically (sp) minded
  21. #21
if i could do it myself, i would, but it would have to be a weekend job as i need my car for work... so if i couldnt get it all done by monday, id be fecked

mmm and your insurance company will say GTF!
  23. #23
i dont know about DIYing it, coz if i fook it up, im boloxed tbh
  24. #24
    GTF?

it could be done ina weekend, get some mates le mans 24 hour pit crew.
  25. #25
get the fuck lol insurance will try to screw you into not paying for anything possible
  26. #26
meh dont care about insurance atm, il bribe them later :d just wana know about swapping the engines....

would i be better off doing the gearbox at the same time then?? since that has done less miles allong with the engine?
  27. #27
    yea may aswell.

before trax me and my mate changed the gearbox.
  28. #28
yeh, im gna ring round see what it will cost, and see which outa my mates think they could do it and how much they would want backhanding...

btw baz... just looked at your prog thread, your car looks awsome

cheers mate, its getting there, just needs tidying up!
  30. #30
same, think for yorkshire meet i might have to crack the polish out
  31. #31
    whats polish? lol
  32. #32
i'd say its 100% worth it, even if you dont cam it etc, your giving your car a whole new life span & saving on maintenance etc...plus if you keep all paper work the car's value is bound to raise with uber low mileage like that...p.s iirc you CAN'T change analog to digi clocks because of wiring system
  33. #33
accidentally drop a VTS engine in there!

    Like what?

    A pulsar..
  35. #35
Insurance will, generally speaking, only care about what they can see - induction kits, exhausts. They aint guna check for cams

Anyway, in my personal experience, you have to be unlucky to have a claim turned down. A lot of peolpe on here jump on the bandwagon, and yes it has happened that peolpes insurance have refused to pay out, but it is rarer than people on here believe.
  36. #36
TBH it's another VTR engine so they don't reeeeeally need too know. It's not like you're putting in a 'S' engine and still insuring it as a VTR.

It's a bit iffy if you have the 98BHP engine but if you've got a fresher 90BHP one then get it in mate!
  37. #37
no, the 98bhp engine is the newer one

    newer engine in older car

and wont the digi clocks go in if i have all the wiring from the other car??

i know i need the ecu to swap em
  38. #38
will need to change the whole loom, wont be hard to do if you have both cars there though
  39. #39
i could do it all for you fella, engine swap or engine and box or engine, box and loom and clocks.

how much?? and where would i have to get the car and engine to??

and how long would it take, coz if its a good travel, id have to arrange geting lifts
  41. #41
if you change the clocks ect. you will have to let dvla no because it will throw all the emmisons and milage out on your mot wouldnt it ??
but yeah i would change the engine well worth it
  42. #42
yeh, il just ring dvla and tell em my engine went pop so iv got clocks to match the milage from the car the engine is from.

what will it do to emmisions though?

actually, the 2003 is in a diff tax bracket thing.

90 odd quid to tax the v reg for 6 months, 65 on the 03 plate
  43. #43
i could do it in a weekend for you no probs. i'm in wakefield west yorkshire but could come collect on a flat back and drop it off after. pm me if you want it doing
