Whining noise

  1. #1
ive got a 1.4 8v west coast 199 v reg saxo, it has started making a quite loud whining noise especially in first gear but it carries on through the gears just gets quieter, it doestn make the noise whe it is in neutral and i rev it only when i am driving it..

anyone have any idea what to check or what could be wrong?

    thanks

Mine just started making this noise. I think it could be the gearbox, but then saying that mine only started when hit a badger the other day.

Does your gearbox crunch when going into gear mate?
  3. #3
gearbox thats what happened to mine today
  4. #4
    so new gearbox then??

i hit a rabbit the other day mines only been doin it since then lol
  5. #5
maybe its the rabbit he might be stuck
  6. #6
yep or second hand one or reconditioned

Get the car looked at before you part with you cash on a new or secondhand box, this could be something less expensive.

If you really think it Is the box then find a gearbox specialist and get more than one opiuion as its gona work out expensive either way.

Dont worry about it until it starts to crunch and wont go into gears..

Mine has been rebuilt and still whines..lol
  9. #9
Agree, until the point comes where you cant select gears Id carry on and put off changing the box. If you worried about the noise tho Id still have the car checked over, like I said it could turn out to be something else
  10. #10
    Exactly dude..

It will probs last ages yet without any probs..
  11. #11
driving home from work just before, it now wont stay in 2nd gear for very long.. every other gear is fine jsut 2nd...still whines though... HELPPP!!
  12. #12
    can anyone help??
  13. #13
hi ya there m8 its a common prob with the saxo gearbox they are abit weak and the bearings let go on them and when they start to go they whine and the reason it wont stay in second is for the same reason the bearings in the box are worn and causing the shafts that the gears are mounted to to move side to side causing it to jump outta gear . the box can be rebuilt which is what ive had done b4

    I hope this helps m8

so its not the clutch it the gearbox?

how much roughly for a recond' box or a brand new one and fitting?

    cheers
  16. #16
brand new box will be fuck loads from PSA - id expect 1k. recon boxes are about 400-500 depending on place.

the whine of the box isnt a huge problem tbh, usually just one of the bearings, some whine and last forever.
  17. #17
its not just whining though it wont go into second gear..

so im looking at about 500 quid for a recond' box and fitting?>

fitting will be more depending on place.

    just get yours refurbed.

Mines been whining for about 11k and is still fine
  20. #20
out of interest when did u buy the car and where?
  21. #21
Danhunt - its not just whining it wont go into second gear now.

B0t13 - bought the car about a month ago from a place near newcastle..

how much would i be looking to refurb my 'box then?
  22. #22
I had whining in my VTR which turned out to be the gearbox, but the big giveaway to me that made me think it was the gearbox is white smoke making its way out of the engine bay out the front grill.

May well be different on a lower model, but i would definitely get it in to have it looked at.
  23. #23
well i havtn ahd any white smoke, but it now wont go in 2nd at all and wont go in 4th now too, still whining like a stuck pig to!

how much ould i be looking at to refurb my gearbox and re-fit etc etc
  24. #24
my mates reckon that becasue my car is so low the driveshafts could be stopping the gearbox and breaking it that way... is this anywere near right or could be possible, i have no idea about this sort of thing!

    cheers
  25. #25
Ride height wont effect how long a box lasts i dont think..

Just go get yours looked at or buy a another one from ebay or something..
  26. #26
so no-ones really had any prblems with lowered saxos and gearbox/driveshaft problems??

how much woul di be lookin at to get mine reconditioned??
  27. #27
Ah, having a really low Saxo like 40mm-60mm you may get CV joint problem as they are at an awkward angle but this wont make much difference to the box..

To have yours reconned depending on the garage £400-£700..

I would get another box from ebay or something, while your at it get a VTS box or a Series 1 106 Rallye box, shorter ratio's so better performance..:d
  28. #28
so how much for a new or reconditioned vts box ?

mines lowered 80mm front and back! but you ont think it wil matter to my gearbox...
  29. #29
had it looked at this morning, linkages are all fine so it looks like the gearbox, ordering a recond' one monday hopefully, going to put a new clutch in while the gearbox is being put in, are standard manufacturers clutches the best bet?
  30. #30
my 1.1i has just done then same been whining for a bit now whines like a bitch in 1st and wont go into second well goes in for a bit but the second you put power on it knoks into neutral
  31. #31
surely you u will get more strain on the box as the shafts are having to transmit the power through a more awkward angle but mainly it will be faster cv joint deterioration.
  32. #32
could this just be the thrush bearing or whatever its called ?
