Quick Guide To DIY Window Tinting (Rear windows)

  1. #1
    Introduction
Noticed there isnt a guide on the forums on how to tint your rear windows. As i was doing mine today i decided i would take a couple of pictures as i went along, to help others

    Best way to do it?
Get a proffessional to do it, i really don't advise you to do it yourself like i have. This guide is a guide on how to put the rear side window tints in. If you want a good job i would suggest you pay a proffessional. I cannot stress this enough. You are gaurenteed not to make it perfect first time.

    Legal?
For more information on the legal / illegal side of window tinting, click here.

    What you will need
    > Window Tinting DIY Kit. Got mine off ebay. Ready cut pieces of film to just go onto the windows.
    > Plastic Card
    > Clean Cloths
    > Bottle with a spray end. (I used a empty dettol one)
    > Washing up liquid
    > Torx Screw driver

    Where?
Always do your window tinting in a well lit, clean, dust free area. Do not attempt to do it in the dark. I suggest you do it indoors, as wind and window tinting film do not make a good combination.

    First of all
Take your rear side windows out. I suggest you get a friend to help you here, Make him or her stand on the outside and hold the window so it doesn't fall and smash on the ground. Its not very easy tinting a smashed window.
There are three screws with star ends (torx). You will need to take these out with a torx screwdriver. Sorry i dont know what size, if someone can add this it'll be very helpful. Make sure you keep the screws, put them in a safe place once they're out.

Ok you have your windows out. Get scrubbing.
Take the three plastic bits out of the glass, do not use force or you will smash your glass, if they are really stuck, leave them in. Make sure you keep them in a safe place once they're out. Now its just a simple case of cleaning the windows. And when i say cleaning, i mean, they have to be really clean, no dust, no hairs, nothing.
Find your mums favourite clean pillow cases, and put them on the floor .

Lie one of windows down on top of them.
Now i used window cleaner first off, because my windows were really dirty. You are not suppose to use chemicals to clean i would not advise you to use window cleaner

Now get your empty, clean, washed out bottle of dettol, make sure theres none inside. Put a little bit of washing up liquid in, you dont need much, then add cold water until its about 3/4 full. Then shake it baby.

Now you got your bottle of soapy water, spray your window with it and clean both sides. Make sure its really clean. One piece of dirt can mess the whole thing up.

Heres a couple pictures of me cleaning mine

(You'll see in the above picture im using a microfibre hand towel thing, buy them from halfords).

Time to put the window tint on.
This is the hard bit. Turn your piece of glass so your inside is facing up, your tint goes on the inside. Spray your very clean window with your soapy water. Make sure you spray it all, so its all wet, absolutely go mad and soak it if you have to, make sure you dont leave any bit of it dry.

    Now...

Get your 'precut' piece of window tint. Start peeling it off the piece of plastic. As your peeling it off, spray the sticky side with your soapy water. This will make it temporarily lose the stickyness (sp?). Once you have peeled it off the piece of plastic paper, lie the film onto the window, with the sticky side on the window and the non sticky side facing up.

There will be lots of air bubbles. Dont worry. Your film wouldnt of stuck yet if you did the earlier steps correctly and sprayed the glass and the sticky side of the film with soapy water. You will be able to move/slide the piece of film into place as it will not be sticky yet. Put the piece of film in place.

Once it is in place, use a plastic card and wipe over the top of the film. Start in the middle and work out towards the sides. The soapy water should come out the sides of the film and off the glass and onto your mums lovely pillow cases.

Once you have removed all the air bubbles, and the film has started to stick, wipe over the film with a cloth, i used a microfibre hand towel thing like earlier

Once its clean and dry, put it back into the car using the plastic bits you took out previously and the torx screws. Remember to get your friend to help you put the glass back in the car, he holds it from outside, you screw it from the inside .

Repeat this scenario all over again for the other side window.

    Hope this helps other people.

    Disclaimer
This is how i did mine, and its worked for me. I did get a couple of scratches and that, i really do recommend you get a professional to do it for youIf you use this guide, you use it at your own choice. I will not take any responsibility for you messing you window tints up.

Hey i paid about £50 and got the front two pieces (50% light through), the back seats, and the back window.

Im only putting the back ones on because the front ones are illegal. And i also have bucket seats that i want to show off .

Anyhow, i've got the link here:
    http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/CITREON-SAXO-5...QQcmdZViewItem

If i was you i would try finding a professional to do them with his own film, get some quotes and what not, Might be worth paying a bit more and getting them done properly.

    Happy to help

i certainly wouldnt use a pin to remove bubbles. it will leave a small hole which light will come through making the hole really obvious from the inside. this may not be important to some people but it really annoys me if its not perfect. you wont be able to see it from the outside though, unless you look closely.

also i wouldnt use plastic on the tint - it will scratch it. you need something with a rubber edge to squeeze out the water.

the only way to get it perfect is to make sure you get it right while the tint is still wet.

if you cant get the tint to lay flat on the window while it is still wet without any 'fingers' or bubbles then i would give up and let the pros do it.

and for anyone asking, the rear window is much harder to do.

    1. because the window is curved in 2 directions which means the tint either needs to be cut or heated to mold to the window
    2. because the rear window is heated, you need to be very careful not to cut though the heaters (the little lines that run accross the window)
    3. because you cant simply remove the window, so you have to do it in an awkward position.

I've done my own on my 205 GTi and the Saxo.. I did it exactly the same way as explained here, cant express how important it is to get it really really wet.. otherwise you get serious problems with air bubbles you cant get rid of!
  6. #6
if you make a complete mess of the bubbles, is it easy enough to take the tint off, if u havnt let it stick?
  7. #7
    Awesome guide man.
Will have to defo try and do it myself
  8. #8
Thats excellent when i did mine i didnt wet it wnough as i thought it wouldnt stick at all and i ended up with a few bubbles i couldnt get rid off. You got a guide to doing the rear one? How would you do it to a car with windows that do not come out lol

Get some pics up matey! Surely the rear isnt that bad? Just takes time and effort! If only it could come out would be so much easier! Nice guide for the sides though matey!
  26. #26
Its really bad mate, getting it redone professionally, after i've sorted the suspension out.

heres couple pics of the back. (looks alright from a distance but its really shit. lol)

Small problem with that is the holes in the tint - Looks pretty bad as i had some in my old ones.
I'm gonna have a go at my back ones this weekend, and maybe attempt the big one on the boot - Not going to be fun!
Then onto 2 new front windows and tinting them!

Going to be fun but i have plenty of tint! lol

Where did you get your tint? and have you had any problems like peeling or bubbling?
