Arch Mods

  1. #1
Sorry to start up yet another thread about alloy size but i cant find what i want.

Ive just sold my 15"s, and im looking to buy 16s cuz i cant afford the arch mods for any bigger.

Ive read that you can fit 195/40/16s with a 35mm drop without any rubbing, but im sure ive also heard poeple say that doesnt work - which is true?

Theres some nice 195/45/16s i might get, I havent got my car lowered yet and understand that 195/45/16s will rub if i do, but will they rub if its not lowered? i can always get them and then get it lowered and the arches modded at a later date.

Lastly, if i do get the 195/45s and do the above, how much arch work will i need and at what rough cost?

Sorry to be a pain, hope you guys can help!

195/40's should only rub very slightly on full lock even when lowered.

195/45's will rub at the rear when not lowered when carrying passengers, and will rub on full lock.

Do the arches yourself and save money. Cut the rear bumper bracket off and take out the arch liner and rear vent box for total rubfree riding.

    thanks for the help.

when you say cut the rear bumper bracket off - dont i need that to keep the bumper on? (sorry i dont know much about it!) what about the power steering pump? i know i need to bend it out of the way when its lowered, does this still apply to 195/40's?

on some mk2's the one of the pwoer steering pipes may need bent out the way.

Honestly have a search using the search this has been covered a few times at least, if you cant find anything ill type it out agian

ive spent most of the afternoon looking at posts, and i think im gonna be a real pain and go for 17s lol.

ok so far ive found out to fit 17s to a furio i will need to:

<ul>[*]Remove the arch liners[*]Take off the plastic arches, trim them, and trim the metal underneath[*]Turn the horn around[*]Bend the power steering pump[*]Remove the bumper brackets[*]Cut out the boot air vents[/list]
Anything ive missed? can i do all this myself? Will this be ok with a 35mm drop when i get one? I also heard something about siliconing the arches when the liner comes out or something, whats that?

    cheers again

silicone will prevent water getting in.. Also use a bit of underseal on the metal you trim back to prevent rusting.
  7. #7
yeah makes sense, but where do you apply the silicone? i can imagine taking off the arch liners then there being a huge space going up underneath the car, do you just put a load in there? is that everything then?
  8. #8
    seems to be everything...
when modifying bumpers brackets is when you require the ol' silicone
  9. #9
ah i see, so you cut the bumper brackets off (just the back ones right?) and silicone the holes yeah? if anyone can think of anthing ese let me know! Sounds quite easy, just alot of small things. will the arches accomadate 45/17 tyres or will they need 40/17s?
  10. #10
on 35mm Id say 40 profile.
be careful when cutting bumper brackets.. I think you may need to re-drill a little hole to hold it up better aswell.
  11. #11
ok, do you mean re drill a hole to connect the bracket back on to in a different place or somthing else?
  12. #12
from what I have read yes..
I have not attempted this myself as I have 16's.
best way is to get under there and take a look at what needs doing.
  13. #13
yeah. Im really stuck between getting 16s or 17s. I really want 17s but dont wana mess up the arch mods or not be able to get them on without rubbing! i hear its expensive for garages to do the arches, anyone know roughly? im also worried that even a garage wont fit them without scrubbing lol
  14. #14
garages will charge a lot, just to bash at arches and remove plasic bits..
circa £200 I was quoted by Rtec , for 17 inch arch mods.. they guaranteed (sp) no scrubbage though.
Still alot of money when thinking about what needs doing.

my local bodyshop were going to charge me £250 to have mine done to fit 17's!thats why im selling them and getting sum 15/16's!
  16. #16
    what are you selling mate?

yeah is alot of cash. i think i may do the liners, trim the arches and turn the horn around myslef, then let a garage do the power steering pump, boot vents and bumper brackets, do u reckon that'd save alot?
  17. #17
It would save a fair bit yes..
Only thing is some garages/bodyshop may not work on arches that have already been worked on , due to the fact they may be accused of damaging/breaking something , that actually happened prior to them even touching the vehicle.

i am selling some 17" chrome vault wheels, brand new with tyres never been used or on the car!cost me £900 new will sell for £700! there the chunky 5 spokes with star centre cap!
  19. #19
Sorry mate way over my budget, im a student lol. cheers anyway. You must be gutted after spending £900 mate thats well bad.

Yeah i can see that being a problem, i know a few people at bodyshops so might be ok. Maybe if i get them to do that stuff first, then i could do the other stuff after. hopefuly might be able to save £100 or so
