Gearbox problem

  1. #1
Help!! I have a MK 2 Saxo VTR and I'm having problems with the gearbox, i'll list these as follows and hopefully someone will have come across the same problem:

    1) Gearbox was suddenly v.stiff and wouldn't go into 2nd gear.

    2) The car now sounds a bit like a milk-float, a bit whiny.

    3) I can get the car into gear but it'll defo stiff, it always has been stiff but now it's even worse......

Is this a new gearbox job or does it sound more like a clutch problem? And does anyone have any suggestions as to what I could do to prolong the gearbox if it's on it's way out?

    Thanks!!

Maybe your gearbox release bearing. Gonna be costly to change though

Thanks for posting a reply... How much do you think for the bearing? And can I do this myself? I'm guessing the box would have to be removed from the car so it can be looked at properly. Looked into getting a new gearbox but after looking into the prices (£250-£400) I've been looking more into cheaper options!!

The price you quoted there, is that fitted? Cos £250 for a gearbox fitting is brilliant. Good luck mate, hope you get it sorted

Sorry, late reply!!!! The price was just for the gearbox! But you know what some garages are like for taking a big cut for the parts! Dodgy buggers aren't they, don't go to Citroen ever, anyone!! (They'd probably charge about a grand knowing them )

The release bearing sounds at fault
Lucky for you this is not actually part of the gearbox and can be replaced without replacing the gearbox, infact the release bearing comes with the clutch normally. Whilst doing the release bearing I tend to do the clutch at the same time to keep costs down in the long run.
If you've got the tools its not too hard a job to do, will take a little longer than an hour as previously stated tho.

My syncrorings were broken. So i had to get a 2nd hand gearbox and with geting a new gearbox i got a new clutch also. These both came to £200 and then i got them fitted at work for a charge of a maccy d's for 3 ppl haha. But if you dont know anyone to fit you a new gearbox (if thats what your going to need) then it will cost around the price of £200. So all together your looking at £400
