phase 2 vtr's... what can you do to make em quicker?

  1. #1
Aint got one yet but looking at VTS's and phase 2 VTR's, swapping from a Corsa Sport 1.6 16v.

I know the obvious route with VTS's but don't know a lot about VTR's...

What's the score then? How can I get decent gains without spending loads of dosh?

I'd guess a full exhaust (inc manifold and decat) would be a few hundred...

Good induction kit of some sort around £100?

    What gains would this give?

Then we talking cams, remapping etc?

    Cheers guys

if you can afford the 16v insurance buy that.
  3. #3
Itll cost you alot more to work on a VTR to make it standard VTS speed.

    await the 8v posse' retaliation.....................

By the time you buy a decent exhaust system, manifold, gearbox and intake, youd be as well having spent that cash on VTS insurance.

    vts all the way matey

In a way, a VTR would save me fuel money... no quicker than my current car.

VTS even bog standard would be quicker but I'd absolutely HAVE to at least have a decat, catback system, filter lol... so whichever I have will get similar mods.

Just thinking I could maybe get a Y/51 plate VTR, cheaper fuel, cheaper tax, couple of simple mods help it go better.. I'd be happy until I could afford something fast VTS would obviously be older and more to run and right now I don't wanna spend any more than I already do (I'm prob getting 65 miles to a tenner from my 1600 16v Corsa but it refuses to break lol).

65 milews to a tenna????? thats shit!!! my 2L nova gets 300 to £35, well it did when it had an engine in. my vts done 280 mile to £33 before i put the cams in.

my vtr does 220 to bout £30, but i do only quite short journeys

definally get a vts mate... i regret it tbh, you think insurance is a killer, but as you spend the performance mods on a vtr, you may aswel have just got a vts as some has said up there.

i didnt think of that at the time, just got cheapest insurance one.

although as said also, vtr's are a lot better on fuel tbh.

go for the vts if you want more power, if you want cheaper tax, insurance and fuel costs go for the vtr.

2001 vtr with green enclosed filter, GMC 4-1, supersprint centre section, piper back box, piper 272 cam with piper valve springs and a piper vernier pulley and a remap, Made 125bhp (cam is very mild) After a 1.4 s1 106 xsi gear box was fitted it used to pull by vts's

    Green enclosed £180
    GMC(Piper) 4-1 £300
    Supersprint centre section £100
    Piper back box £120
Piper cam with stronger valve springs £350
    Vernier pulley £98
    Remap £350
Xsi box £125 + new clutch at £90

It all came to about £1700 - If you cant insure a vts for that or less then go for it - dont forget, none of the above included fitting so you can add that ontop.

I have had 3 vtr's and 2 vts's. 16v is so much better, it really really makes a difference

Early VTS's and late VTR's are in the same tax banding. Late VTS and early VTRs get the 200+quid a year tax.
  14. #14
Cheers for the replies guys. I think 1700 quid on mods would prob be over what I'm thinking but I bet it's a pretty special VTR

I think for fuel consumptions sake, either with a full exhaust, fancy air filter etc would do the job. Just need double check on insurance quotes.

Y plate onwards VTR's are 77 quid for 6 months or 140 for the year. So in theory if I have a trouble free car it's got the potential to save me money and be just as quick as mine if not quicker to be honest lol.

VTS would deffo tick the performance boxes but cost more to run in general. I'm such a tight arse

What you gotta remember about running a VTS before so many people simply put "just buy the 16v" is that everything will be more expensive... Fuel, tax, costs if anything goes wrong etc...

Having a VTR leaves me with extra cash in my pocket at the end of each month, which as i've learnt (big phone bill) is vital sometimes! Especially at the end of the year when its that lovely thing we call Christmas

Still... if i could afford it you're damn right i'd have a VTS... But if you're looking to save cash both short + long term i don't think a VTR is a bad option. The good thing about modding a car is you do it when you want, and when you have cash... I'm doing stuff on my VTR in January that i wouldn't have had the cash to do when i first bought it... But there was no way i was putting off buying a car just so i could save up another 6 months and get a different thing...

Yeah, right now I literally have no spare money and being sensible should not even consider swapping my car as it will just not break, it's a very reliable, solid car and drives well. So I'm a bit mad really and choosing xmas time aswell... lol... VTR be a sensible choice. It's got the looks, it's not exactly dead slow and I for some reason really want a set of the 14's on but polished! lol!
  17. #17
tbh i have a vtr and i really do love it. I wouldnt swap it for a vts there wouldnt be much point as my insurance would rocket, im gonna have my vtr a few years and then when my insurance is sensible im going to invest in something bigger and better. If i could have a vts now i would but theres no way i could afford one!
  18. #18
how much are you lot paying to insure vtr's? it cant be that much cheaper than a vts. i was paying £900 fully comp on a cammed vts with all mods declared and 1yr ncb.
  19. #19
A VTR for me is about £100 extra per year than my 1400..

A VTS they wont even bother giving me a quote..lol
  20. #20
    take a look at dom_vtr 's thread, he's pushing 127bhp without a cam.
  21. #21
    thas good
  22. #22
how do you know its accurate though? its been said many times before , dont beleive the RR too much. i have had 163hp from my vts with just exhuats and filter...............
  23. #23
if ur after fuel ecconomy there not bad at all if i keep it at 70 im getttin nearly 100miles to the 10er, bout the same as my 1.4/1.1 tbh
