Got my first car on the weekend ready for passing my test. Drove home most of the way (150 mile journey) fine then about 15 min from home it kept kicking itself out of 5th gear and you had to physically hold it in place to stop it. Anyone know what might be wrong ?
Kicking out of 5th

#2sorry to say you need a new gearbox
-
#3And how much will that cost
-
#4what is it a 1.1?
-
#5if its a 1.1 gearbox approx £50 - £100 second hand (ebay)
labour if you shop around £80 - £130 tops -
#6Been phoning up breakers yards and cheapest i got so far is £145. There is one on ebay for £45 but i ain't got the money till after Christmas
-
#7Sorry mate but your gearbox release bearing has gone. New gearbox it is. Looking at around £400 for it fully fitted I reckon. Sorry to hear that though mate
-
#8£145 for a 1.1 gearbox dont go to a breakers just look around on ebay and wait for a cheap one. honestly if you search around you should get whole job done for under £200. (thats with you finding your own gearbox)
Did the person you bought the car off tell you it had a faulty gearbox? -
#9No, it just passed its MOT and only started kicking out about 15min from home.
-
#10sorry to hear hope you get it fixed for cheap.
-
#11Might be worth checking the gearbox linkages first!
-
#12Get under the car and check the linkages firstly. Wouldn't be the release bearing as that wouldn't cause 5th gear to fail on it's own, neither does a worn release bearing mean a new 'box. 5th gear is on a seperate shaft on it's own so it may just be that 5th gear has worn.
Put a thread in the Wanted section (once you have 50 posts mind
), there are usually a few 'boxes on here that go for around 50quid.

#13same happened to my dads polo
kept kicking out of 5th
and struggled to go into gear too
ended up having to get new box -
#14it goes into gear fine and will go into 5th then about 1 min of being in 5th it kicks itself out.
@ Sean: Also i'm a premium member so can already post in the wanted section, so when i get a bit of cash ill put an advert. -
#15Surely Sean if the release bearing had gone though you may as well get a new box as the cost will be roughly the same??
-
#17Depends what you think is easier I suppose, finding another gearbox or buying and fitting a new clutch kit.

Possibly another avenue to check aswell as whats Seans suggested, would be the bottom gearbox mount having play in it , often causing the gearbox linkage to rub against the bulk head . Is it popping out of gear under load or when you're coming off the throttle ?

#19was the car bought from a garage? any warranty? if you did take it back if not then looks as though ur gonna have to front the bill im afraid mate!
-
#20Sorry to nick this thread but my VTR is doing exactly the same. It goes through all the gears fine its only when Im backing off the power and the revs drop it pops out of 5th and into neutral.Quote:Possibly another avenue to check aswell as whats Seans suggested, would be the bottom gearbox mount having play in it , often causing the gearbox linkage to rub against the bulk head . It will only pop out when in 5th gear, all the other gears are fine.
Any idea's and how much to fix? -
#21What is wrong with u idiots!
Who the fuck replaces the gearbox because the release bearing has gone?
Number 1 a release bearing is dead cheap and 2 it would never cause 5th ( or any gear) to pop out because its only in contact when the clutch is in and has nothing to do with gear selection other than releasing the pressure off the clutch.
Stol giving advise when you don't know what your talking about!
Clearly the first steps to solving this problem are checking all the linkages from the stick to the box itself, the check mountings. You don't go straight in with "oh you need a new box"!
Also if you can't solve the issue, 5th is on the end of the box so when the box is off its easy to just pull the top cap of the box and check it out inside. I wouldn't recommend going any further than that unless you have a good knowledge of gearboxes. See a garage about it or contact a professional for repair. -
