Christmas Eve Shennanigans

  1. #1
    Hey everyone

On Christmas Eve of all nights my VTS decided to break down on me

On the way home at 9pm and had to wait 4 hours to join the AA and get someone out!

Anyways, here i was parked in a bus stop with the hazards on after losing all gears whilst a change from 2nd to 3rd
And i knew it wasnt the clutch or driveshaft...

Me and the engineer had a chat over the engine bay and a part of the gearing system that runs on a ball and socket method had just come loose...

I know its french but what is the reason for this just coming out?
What is this part called? iirc Gear Linkage...
How much are they to get a new one or is it worth taking apart and re-fixing properly?

    Rep waiting for info

    Thanks

From your description is it the 3 linkage rods? If so yeah, deffo replace and it's really not hard a job.

They look like these and run around the back of the engine bay from the gearbox selector to the one that goes under the car that attaches to your gear stick.

Reason could be wear and tear, or maybe the rubber part is fudged again due to wear and tear, if I am going on about the right part though lol

gearlinkages are cheap, they pop off from excessive force put on them/wear and tear.

    not a bad design tbh

This kinda happened to my VTR but somehow I was still getting gears with the amazment of my local garage staff. One of the big rubber balls had come off and the linkage was just flopping about inside. But I still got gears, yes it was a 5 mile throw between them all but it worked haha. Took 20 minutes and just about £10 to sort though so its worth doing.

i had the sme problem with myy vtr first time it was the gearbox blew when we got it off there was hole in the bellhousing you could see the diff cogs we had to sweep the garage up after what a mess it left and when we got the new gearbox in one of the linkrods was worn and popped off so i couldnt get gears PANICK but i got it sorted it was 14 quid for one linkrod from the pugeot parts desk hope that helps at all they are also on ebay for some alloy ones with clips on them to stop them popping off

Cheers for the help and advice everyone

Had a rough idea of what it was and how to fix them but just wanted some opinions and war stories

For the record the drive home on Crimbo eve was one of the best driving experiences of my life hehe
Easy on the gears, cruised back with some Skylines, Golf, Audis and Mercs down four/five lanes of empty motorway

    Thanks again

So you were worried for me?

    Bless

It wasnt the track session i had in mind
Hardly put my foot down as everytime i went over around 3,000RPM
the smoke came out before getting thicker

Its nice that as soon as we were leaving after the car had cooled down no more smoke came out as i had burned most of it off
