Right i am looking to buy some newman ph3 cams but been speaking to someone and he says about custom cams which are only £300, they have a lift of 15mm instead on 10mm and he said they will better suit the car then the newmans, i am so confused lol do i get them or not as they sound better
Custom cams vs newmans

#2Cam you require depends on the spec of the rest of your engine. The further you go with the cam profile the more parts you have to change and the harder it becomes to pass a MOT.
-
#3all i am looking to go is to port and polish head also refurb it, cams refurb bottom end, standalone ecu and also to port and polish inlet as it is very restricted then maybe throttlebodies
-
#4That will limit you to a fast road cam them so you may be best just giving GMC, Longman or QEP a call. They will be able to supply you the correct cam.
-
#5You can't pick a cam just by the amount of lift. With that setup I wouldn't pick too wild a cam. Especially if you are keeping the car on the standard induction... in fact I would check whether the Newman ph3 is suitable alsoQuote:all i am looking to go is to port and polish head also refurb it, cams refurb bottom end, standalone ecu and also to port and polish inlet as it is very restricted then maybe throttlebodies
Remember performance is not all about peak power. If you have nothing in the midrange then on slow-medium speed corners you could find yourself at a disadvantage. -
#6newmans cams are only 225, and how do you know theses "custom cams" will perform well? has anyone you know got a set?
Atleast we know the newmans cams aint crap
taken from newmans website:
PHASE 3 (PH3) FAST ROAD RALLY
This type of camshaft is really the limit for normal road use. It will require fuel system and management modifications. It will have a
noticeable loss of low-down power and the tick-over will be heavy. For competition use, where mid-range power is important and road
use where the maximum power is required
Ph4 cams is when you start needing mods to the induction etc
-
#7lol, who told you to put them in? fit them and you'll here some very unhealthy noises when you start it up, you'll hvae 16 bend valves, probably marked pistons and maybe damage the boresQuote:Right i am looking to buy some newman ph3 cams but been speaking to someone and he says about custom cams which are only £300, they have a lift of 15mm instead on 10mm and he said they will better suit the car then the newmans, i am so confused lol do i get them or not as they sound better

haha, wasnt some sort of carpark hero was it? -
#8and where do you get it from that the standard inlet is restrictive?
-
#9i was just asking guys lol will i wont be running standard induction or exhaust, apparantly it could be done but i was unsure. I needed to make mind up as i need to decide whether to send cheque or not for the newcam group buy
-
#11lol, he hope he isnt a 'professional' and just 1 of your mates?
-
#12ahh i am under attack run away lol
i dont know much about cams etc, i am just telling you all what i was told. I need advice on cars dont have a clue
-
#13lift of 15mm is stupid/imopssible for road use.
the most agressive cam used by cat cams are the 816's and they have 13mm at maximum lift wich are used for extreme rally or race aplications.
the newmans ph3 are very well suited for road use as they keep a degree of driveability.
dont be fooled into thinking that the more aggresive the cam the better results because this is nonesense.
find out if there is anyone local to you with a similar set up to the ph3 newmans and ask if theyll take you for a spin,i doubt you'd be dissapointed. -
#14i meant i hope the person that was telling you this isnt in the motor trade?
if he tells you anything in the future i would do the complete opposite
its impossible to use that cam on standard pistons, maybe if you completely backed the timing off but then it would be pointless. -
#15Well 15mm of lift is fuck loads and you will need iTBs and rebated pistons. Not even some rally spec cams have 13mm lift!
The Newman PH3 seem perfect for VTS on standard ecu and inlet. As with 708s and BP285 etc etc etc. -
#16right well i will order the newmans tomorrow, i am looking for a standalone ecu also where do you get them from. Thanks everyone
-
#17you can get management systems from a lot of places like gmc motorsport,QEP and if you go direct youd probably get them cheaper.
they are pricey though, i just bought mine and it would cost £950 for the public but i got mine for £650.it the kms with wideband lambda and single plug adaptor. -
#18unless your going for ITBs or turbo etc i wouldnt bother with standalone.
-
#20well if your going for bodies then get it. if you definetly not then i wouldnt bother.
i would plan you spec before you start buying though, otherwise it costs you at least twice as much changing your spec all the time. -
#21Most standalones do not get on with Saxo inlet system sensors i.e the idle control valves. They can't read or use them so in order for your car to even idle, you will have to drive it round the block really gently before you do anything... So ive been told
