f**ked off - Head Gasket

  1. #1
this is abit of a long one.

i changed my standard rad to a vts rad a while ago. when i looked under the rad filler cap there were one or two white dots. i thought this meant that my head gasket had gone. but i wiped it clean and changed the rad. i checked it a week later and it was clean with no white dots.

took it to my mates today for the crank shaft seal doing as there was an oil leak coming from under the timing belt cover. when he phoned me to tell me it was ready he said he put abit of oil in and under the cap was loads of crap. he checked under the rad filer cap and there was loads of oil in the water and loads of brown/white sludge. he also said that there was oil leaking from number one on where the manifold meets the block. he said that its probably the head gasket thats gone but to run it for a couple of days and check it again and see what its like.

    how fucked off am i!!!!!!

my question is, how long really can i drive it like this?
is it defo the head gasket thats gone?

i know that i need to watch the temp as if the sludge blocks the thermostat it wont open so the engine will over heat and BANG!

hes said that he will do it all for £150 which i think is quite good, am i right?

Well when the headgasket begins to go, you run the risk of the engine running hot, which if run hot can lead to a warped head iirc which would mean your head will definately need to be skimmed.

Best bet to do is to get the head off asap, and get the head checked to see if it's warped + replace headgasket etc. might be a good idea to replace headgasket and water pump whilst it's off but depends on mileage. I wouldn't run it at all - you run the risk of being stranded if it completely goes.

If there is an issue with the head/oil leak. Then driving it will only cause further
    issues.

There is all sorts of investigation that can be done to check the state of the
    engine out.
You probably have never read in my thread, but I had a rocker cover leak,
which was so bad that oil vapour was getting into the interior thru the air
    vents.

ECU light came on. Was really bad. If I continued driving the engine would
    of completely ceased up!!!

I now have compression issues, had blue smoke coming out the exhaust.
But these issues are only at very high revs once the engine is red hot.

I was told that the car was fine otherwise. But its going in for major checks
next week. If hes just told you to drive it and 'see' without telling you whats
wrong. What if it does go seriously wrong???

Tis a risk without a professional opinion of the problem.

Leak was cause the Rocker wasnt fitted properly. Bodge job FTW!
Im wondering if the leak has caused the further compression issues though.
I never get blue smoke, it was only on full pelt at the trackday. Was everywhere!
