wheel refurb progress thread

  1. #1
I recently bort some vtr alloys off ebay for £30 had no picson the auction but I thought i would get them anyway and refurb them. Auction said curbed but not badly or deep. Was pleasantly suprised when they came like this:

I started sanding them down as I planned to paint them:

I decided because of their good condition that i would try to polish them so i got the paint stripper out and cleaned them up:

I quickly decided i would never be able 2 keep them clean so I went back 2 the idea of painting but carried on stripping the paint 2 bare metal.
  2. #2
    any more pics?
  3. #3
    sorry about double pic lol

    anyway...
i stripped the wheels back 2 the metal so they looked like this:

then sanded them goin from 240 - 1200 grit sandpaper, so they looked like this:

then i got on to cleaning them, gave them a good wash inside and out,
    before:

    after:

oooooo looks nice!!!!! 10 post to 1k!
  5. #5
Lookin good ive just started refurbin my old vtr alloys!! Sanding aint easy lol!!
  6. #6
next up is painting, i had to get some etch primer beacuse it sticks 2 the alluminium, its had one coat of this tonight, this is as far as i have gone.

  7. #7
next up will be some filler primer and then the top coat of paint and laquer, mixed the paint 2night, its a dark almost gunmetal silver , looks nice, cant wait 2 get them sprayed!! there then goin on my good old dark green 99 1.1 lol
  8. #8
Out of interest how have you got rid of the kurbing marks? Have you sanded them out or filled them or what?

    Lookin good anyway!
  9. #9
the kurbing marks wernt 2 bad really so i just sanded them out with 240 grit then smoothed up to 1200 grit. on th very rim there are still marks but i wasnt 2 bothered about these.
  10. #10
they look really nice tbh mate. keep up the good work 8posts to 1k
  11. #11
should look good painted i will post the pics as soon as they progress.
  12. #12
that etching primer is good stuff.

i did my 205 gti speedlines myself.

i adivise around 4 coats of primer then about 4 coats of laquer to ensure
    the finish lasts.

    good job so far !
  13. #13
yeh i read that you need 4 coats of primer up 2 5 coats of the colour and then 3/4 coats of laquer. cheers for the advice.
  14. #14
looks good so far mate. bet you cant wait to get them done!
  15. #15
So would you recommend i use etching primer instead of just normal grey primer??
  16. #16
if you have gone 2 the metal use etching primer because it bonds to the alloy if you still have paint you can use normal primer. im using the etch primer for the base coat then normal primer for the primer layors.

Well the majority of the wheel is down to bare metal it is still like primer gray in areas so im goin to put some paint stripper on them and get them rite down!! cheers pal
  18. #18
no problem, what are the plans for yours colour wise?
  19. #19
Im not sure yet was thinking white. then i thought gloss black. Id like something different so ive got a mate to photoshop me a wheel in gloss black with the grooves in the wheel in yellow or white with yellow grooves because i cant picture it! Ive also been tempteg to fill the grooves and have them completely smooth. What do u think and what are your plans?
  20. #20
im doin mine dark silver/gunmetal. what colours your car?
  21. #21
My cars silver with anthracite vts wheels which is why i was thinkin white so i hav a dark set and a light set. If i do the vtr wheels gloss black ill prob redo my vts wheels white.
  22. #22
done a cracker of a job their mate
  23. #23
looking good mate. You have put a fair amount of effort into those!
  24. #24
yeh put plenty of time and effort into them, the preps the hard bit!
i recon you shud do your vts wheels white claret and then your vtr wheels gloss black. but thats just my opinion coz i dont like vtr wheels white.
  25. #25
Hmm cheers for your opinion gives me something to consider while preppin the vtr wheels. Anyone else want to recomend something to give me some more ideas.
  26. #26
today i primed them with filler primer now they are ready to spray gun metal!

  27. #27
    looking good chap!
  28. #28
r u just using aerosol spray cans to do this mate?
  29. #29
the etch primer which was just 1 coat was in a spray can the rest (filler primer and next the colour) is done using a spray gun
  30. #30
just got the colour on tonight, now they just need laquer and tyres!!

  31. #31
oh and by the way i need some original vtr wheel bolts if any 1 knows where i can get any cheap!?!
  32. #32
respect for doing it yourself dude

bolts could try the scrappy or even citroen shouldnt think there that expensive
  33. #33
Iv asked on ebay and people say £30 delivered. i might try the scrap yard this week if i dont get a better price than that. citroen will be the last resort haha
  34. #34
Citroen charge about £1.18 or something Per bolt if that helps, Over a quid anyway.
Nice one for doing them yourself!
    David
  35. #35
cheers mate that actually help to know! been told its best to get the original bolts because they are flat headed unlike most alloy bolts!
  36. #36
quick question. How long did you spend on the sanding stage?

All together per wheel? rough timescale?
  37. #37
i love the look of the wheels primed
  38. #38
i would say about 1.5-2 hours. i would recomend using paint stripper and getin all th paint off becasue alot of my time was used up getin patches of paint left after stripping them off. if you get them 2 th bare metal then sand i would say you could have them done in an hour/ hour and a half.
  39. #39
wheels look cool primed! wonder if thers anyone with just primed and laquered wheels lol?
  40. #40

thats what i was thinking would it go shiny?
  41. #41
nice one mate. Im doing mine atm and spent an hour on my most clean wheel (less kerbed) and its taken an hour - not even finished it!

If you get some new bolts - could you let us know? Im thinking of doing mine white but with rusty bolt heads they will look pap.

Its eother new bolts or bolt covers like predator_vtr......cant source them though!
  42. #42
yeh i presume it would with laquer on!
  43. #43
i havnt even got bolts yet so ur lucky lol. black bolt covers could look good on white wheels, good contrast. il let you no if i find any bolts and price
  44. #44
    nice one mate. appreciate it!

Yep, cars black so was thinking that way. It would just be a pain to repaint the bolts themselves..... any they are bound to get messed up when removing etc.

good work anyway mate..... nice colour, very subtle!
  45. #45
Look really good pal ive nearly got mine sanded down now. Its not easy with the weather. I followed your example and used paint stripper makes it a whole lot easier. I sanded all the first wheel. Heres a photshop someone did for me with the grooves filled what do you think?

  46. #46
Never seen the R rim with its grooves filled in, be a nice touch.

Look forward to seeing pics on the car
  47. #47
nice one! filling in the grooves! What colour is that btw?
  48. #48
yeah someone on here has smoothed the alloy out... tried finding the thread but couldnt find it
  49. #49
mate the rims look good filled looks different!
  50. #50
btw did u ever get photoshops of different colour grooves?
  51. #51

I dont no but i like it!
  53. #53
cant beat anthracite/ gunmetal wheels look the best on lighter cars or smoked themed cars!
  54. #54
hopefully getting the bolts this week from my local peugoet garage, my dad went in tonight and they do the correct bolts for the wheels at about 20 quid a set.
  55. #55
Them wheels are looking so good fella. The results are outstanding when you take your time.
  56. #56
Heres another two photshops i have had done what do people think and what do you reckon 9ds9
    Black with yellow grooves:-

    White with yellow grooves:-
  57. #57
Strangely I like the Black/Yellow ...don't know why but i like it
  58. #58
I want something different which is why im askin for people to do different photoshops for me. I cant make my mind up but i think im leaning towards the smoothed ones.
  59. #59
its a tough call between yellow and black and the smoothed. i really cant decided which i prefer both look good and noone else has wheels like them so their both individual!
  60. #60
Ad go for thhe smooth looks difrent and looks smart
  61. #61
yeh i probs think go smoothed. propbs easier than havin 2 paint all th grooves aswell lol
  62. #62
How would ou smooth the grooves would you rub the wheel down with 240 grit then do the filling then rub down with the 1200 grit?
  63. #63
yeh thts probably the best way, cant say im any sort of expert so if any 1 else thinks different say. but yeh 240 and then loads of filler and that smoothed down should do the trick! keep me updated mate
  64. #64
    will do !
  65. #65
what stage u at with ur wheels at the moment?
  66. #66
They are nearly all sanded down to bare metal. I work nights so its hard to find time and because of the shitty weather i cant really do them outside. My uncle is coming to visit this weekend so i mite try and blag him to take them and finish them off coz hes got a spray gun so it would be a better finish than out of a can. I would like to do them myself though to see how they turn out.

Where are you upto with yours are they finished and wrapped in rubber yet?
  67. #67
looking good mate! i bought 4 last night and started the refurb process!

taken about 45mins so far from cleaning to paint stripper, jus got 10 more mins before i brsh the paint off! i recon a wheel a day for prep.

Il start priming and filling next week.
  68. #68
laquers goin on tonight, gettin the bolts start of next week. il probs leave the laquer 2 dry until the middle/end of next week to hopefully fit next weekend! lets se how the plan actually goes though lol
  69. #69
the wheels are finished! well apart from tyres and bolts pics 2 follow and belive me they dnt do justice!
  70. #70

  71. #71
Still looks like kerbing/scratch marks on the lip of the rim....

I hope thats just the photo.

    Love the colour mate!
  72. #72
ther is still some kurbing on the very rim photo shows it up, its inevitable they will sadly get kurbed at some point tho so i ddnt spend too much time tryin to get these perfect or i would have had 2 sand half the rim away lol. and yeh im chuffed with the colour mix!
  73. #73
They look really good now im thinkining of doin mine that colour! What colour is it pal. Fair comment about the kurbing im not goin to try and get the lip on mine perfect just get it lookin a bit better! Im no pro lol
  74. #74
i actually couldnt tell you what the colour is lol its silver mixed with black so it hasnt got a name or code. its a light sort of anthracite silver
  75. #75
Its nice. Any way give me a blow by blow step by step guide of everything you did. When you sanded with what grit etc and everything you used. I want a finish like that so want to check im doing it right. lol
  76. #76
going to do a guide il pm u the link or u might stumble across it haha
  77. #77
    http://www.saxperience.com/forum/sho...d.php?t=126211
guide how to do your wheels like this!
  78. #78
they look ace! defo a future mod
  79. #79
Well done pal good guide!! Ill let u no how mine come out when i finally finish them lol .
  80. #80
cheers mate looking forward to seeing the final outcome!
  81. #81
they look good m8. paint job looks spot on. you should ov filled the kerb marks though, only an extra 15mins work per rim. why do you say they will get kerbed anyway? don't park close to kerbs....
  82. #82
take it uv never drivven down tiny back roads of northumberland then! lol
  83. #83
i no what you mean about tiny back roads, but shorley you can go round corners abit slower to avoid damaging your wheels? i would
  84. #84
also im not the only 1 using the car so i cant garentee it
  85. #85
Haha That made me smile.. Made me think of my mum..

First time she drove my Saxo, it had 16's (Luckily not in great nick anyway), She kerbed it half way round, and has done it to every car of mine since, yet doesn't do it to her own!

Strange how other people manage it so well! lol
  86. #86
iv stripped my tsw track wheels right back am a best using etch primer or will just normal primer do is there a big difference in price in the two
  87. #87
    Well Done Looks Good
  88. #88
etch primer is the best to use on metal because it bonds to the alloy. its not too expensive off ebay £10.95 free postage u only need 1 coat of this then u can build up normal primer.
  89. #89
Cheers for the link pal i havent been able to find any etch primer anywhere.
  90. #90
wheels look mint buddy, shame about the tiny kerb marks but fantastic job on it well done pal
  91. #91
yeh took me a while 2 find some. it was 18 quid at av taylors parts shop and thats a bit steep lol
  92. #92
the wheels are complete!!!! got the tyres on 2day! look great especially since all 4 wheels only cost me 30 quid!!!

  93. #93
    nice wheels
  94. #94
cheers im chuffed with the results
  95. #95
    Yeah they look good mate
  96. #96
love it... gives me more reason to find some now.
  97. #97
Look really good pal i got a bit more done on mine yesterday just need some etch primer now. I will keep you updated
