K&N VS PiperX. Pros and Cons

  1. #1
Trying to decide between these two manufacturers for an OPEN cone filter for my 1.1. These are the pro's and con's of each IMO.

    PiperX foam

Pro's- Better 'roaring' sound apparantly than K&N. Slightly cheaper.
Con's- Can decrease performance as they sit right at the back of the engine bay and suck in hot air. Doesnt come with cold air feed.

    OR......................

    K&N 57i

Pro's- Possibly better performance as sits more up front. Has cold air feed.
    Con's- More expensive. Quieter?

Im looking for one that sounds great, and doesnt decrease performance/slight gain if poss.

And no i don't want a sealed one. What would people go for/reccomend?

Either way you'll be losing performance due to heat soak so if it's sound you're after go for the better sounding one. Just buy some piping and make a cold air feed for the piperX one. The only way you'll see gains is by getting an enclosed kit or mounting an open cone away from the engine, i.e. at the bottom of the bumper or in place of a fog light, but by doing this you'll most likely soak up water and f*ck your engine. That's my thoughts on this matter anyway, I'm sure you'll get more!

May I ask why would you not want a sealed one?

Because i dont really want to go above the £100 mark on an induction kit as iv got other plans for my money i.e ICE.

Also, i appreciate that with a 1.1 there isnt much point spending money on performance mods as with such a small engine there will be minimal increases. I just want one that sounds good really.

buy a second hand BMC or Viper dude,
Open filters are a bit chav, especailly on relatively standard flat arch models?

Its a possibility. I was looking at the raceland one with a green filter on kam racing but they only seem to do it for the VTR/S? Can you get them for the 1.1?

itll fit your 1.1, pm or look @ Snewhams progress thread dude.

ANYONE ELSE GOT ANY THOUGHTS ON THIS?

buy a raceland one, k&n and pipercross are a waste of money, suck in too
    much hot air.

It's really up to you to decide what's more important to you, noise or performance? If it's noise then go for an open filter, if it's performance go for an enclosed like the raceland with green filter, or just buy a panel filter for your airbox.

Its not going to make any difference which one you use mate

If it does...you will never notice it.

So stick one the one you get your hands on first and enjoy a little bit of throatyness

Put a green panel filter in your standard airbox.

    Job's a good'un.
