How does a normal service improve the performance of a car?

All over the place i've been hearing people being told that a good service should sort out running problems with their cars, and restore lost performance.

Am i missing something?

take it to kwik fit, oil change will sort out bad timing,.. obviously

Old oil, old plugs, etc will loose you performance, however not a substantial ammount, but you should be on top of your servicing anyways!

TLC - check the simple items & replace and if it still runs poor its something else!

i think his taking the piss..

people who know nothing about a cars running problems etc... eg.. bad idle. etc.. or come to think of it any problem....

someone will always say a good service will sort it out...

Old oil though will make no difference to running, will just increase wear of bearings.

Old plugs, they are scheduled to be changed every 20k or so, but should realistically last double or triple that with no problems.

Air filter and fuel filter again should last well over the normal service interval before causing any sort of problem, i guess if you neglected the service schedule it might fuck stuff up a bit. but then i wonder how many people have actually really felt a big difference after a service, i reckon it's all in their heads.

i can tell you if u think a service doesn't make a big difference then ur dumb in the head of course it does after a service my saxo was a completely different car its does make a difference as the oen stupid enough to leave out serivces all the cars and then bang someone goes trust me super 4's with some good synthetic oil at 100 mph and some high octane makes a big difference

Sorry mate i think your mis informed.

Oil oil picks up "crud" from around the components and decreases the hydrodynamic lubracation properties of the oil, thus reducing the slip of the rotational components, thus creating drag, not nesscessarily creating more wear, depends what shite is in the oil. But at high rpm when then engine is pretty much vibrating instead of rotating, it can make a noticable difference.

Shitty spark plugs will cause a horrid spark and therefore possible. incomplete combustion therefore decreasing the power output of the engine
