changing pistons?

Can vts pistons be changed without removing the crank?

I would have said so - as they go in from the top of the block, I presume they can be removed through the top once the 'rods' are disconnected from the crank.

But I've never done it so wouldn't be able to say for def.

Yes and you can do it with the engine still in the car.

So it would just be a matter of having the head off, sump off, then unbolt the bottom the the rods from crankshaft, then lift them out the top ??

Doesn't sound too bad really, was thinking it over re: fitting high comp pistons but disregarded it as I wouldn't know where to start with ordering bottom end bearings - different colours/clearances, plus would probably be good to hone the piston walls - so in reality is probably easier to have the egine out for working on it.

ye they can be just remove the sump obv drain it first lol. and undo the 2 bolts holding the big ends on. have you got a piston ring compressor to put the new ones in ?

The only think is if you are not using the same pistons you really should have the bores honed. If the bore has any scores or steps in them you should get them bores. If your new pistons have a taller top ring this is a absolute must.
