Right im pretty clueless but i have a 106 gti.. and ive done 90k miles is it worth porting and polishing the head and fitting cams or should i just have a newer engine fitted ?? and what prices am i looking at ?? and who are good ?? and what gains am i looking at ? thanks !

the mileage of the engine doesnt really matter mate as long as its been well maintained. if it has then yes it would be worth doing the work if thats what you want.
QEP are known for their head work. cams wise really depends what your planning to do in the future with the engine

Exactly. And what do you want out of all of this? You need to decide on all of these things first...

Get a head off a c2 vts, very cheap and has larger valves so no need for a port/polish.

    Aftermarket Cam's
    Headwork
    ITB Kit
    Standalone ECU

Should see the healthy side of 160-170 bhp

cams and a remap for 1500. 155-160bhp trerritory.

milage doesnt kill tu engines, improper care does so if looked after it will be fine.

If your fitting cams dont forget to factor in the price for new followers. About £150 from QEP, dead easy to fit. Get some cams catcam 708s (they are like £350 wut vat and delivery) then a remap (anywere from £300-500). So you could do it for under a grand. With what you have left you could get a new timing belt, water and oil pump just to be sure you have a nice solid base.
