Front Bumper Splitter query!!!

  1. #1
Right i have a silver front bumper sitting in my garage which i am going to mess about with, the first thing i want to do is get rid of the standard black splitter at the front, will it just pull off or will i have to cut it off?
I am going to replace it with a seat ibiza front splitter, are these a direct fit or will it need cutting?

Also i want to smooth over the foglight holes what materials will i need to do this as i presume fibreglass will not stick to the plastic.

    Rep will be given.

    Cheers

    Dan

    anyone???

just bought the ibiza splitter brand new for £17.74 from my local dealer so need help with the above.

Splitter may need some reshaping for best fit!

i think they can fit under the standerd splitter, save you messing about cutting it off.
  5. #5
yeh they can but the original splitter is tatty and a bit has been cut out near the towing eye so i want to get rid of it.

does it need to be cut off or is it just a simple clip off jobbie?

the standerd one needs to be cut off. a newbee asked that a few weeks ago as his was dammaged, i thought it would clip off easy but apparently it doesnt lol

    Get the hacksaw out.

As for fiberglassing the foglight holes is it really worth the hastle?
If you do decide to do it, what about plastic welding a flat surface behind the bumper so that the fibreglass wont sag?

yeh i fancy doing the foglights, seen a few done and they look ok. just fancy something a bit fresh for the front bumper.

well i have decided im going to cut out 2 bits off plastoc off of an old damaged front bumper and then im going to plastic weld it in then go over it with filler.

will take a while but i fancy a challenge.

or you could fible glass some mess to the back of the holes and then build it up with firbe glass from there
  13. #13
why dnt you buy fog light covers and just fill in the edges.
    like these covers..

as long as you key the area surrounding the fog lights well, the fibreglass will stick to the face of the bumper. Key the rear as well and use mesh (as said) to work to.

Standard splitter will need cutting off.

Ibiza splitter needs the ends trimming off. You also need to cut slots in the rear of the splitter where it will bend to make it more flexible.

how much of the splitter needs trimming off andy? it should turn up tuesday so wana get cracking straight away.

when you say key what do you mean?
  16. #16
key = rough the surface up a little. Remove the laquer etc and sand using an 80 grit sandpaper. The surface just needs to be rough for the fibreglass to grip to. One of the reasons why fibreglass and filler crack is because the surface underneath is too smooth and the glass/filler cant grip and so just lifts.

On the ends of the splitter, about 2" needs cutting off at each end iirc. For the corners, I cut little triangles into the back so it can bend as the saxo bumper corners are sharper than the ibiza ones.

    Hope this helps

ah cheers andy massive help, what i will probably do is cut the triangle bits in the back of the splitter, attach it to the bumper and then trim off the ends.

whats the fibreglass like to use? can i use the thin type mesh from b&q's and places like that?

    you have been repped andy.

    Cheers mate

Yes - I reccomend fitting splitter before cutting ends off, else you might cut it too short!

Use any mesh, as long as you stick it to the bumper solidly. I'd also cut the lip off the back of the foglight holes (where the lights clamp on to) else you will need fibreglass an inch thick.

Fibreglass isn't too bad to use. Just mix it well with the included hardner and overfill the area. You can then rub it back level with sandpaper and a block.

will post pics up when i get started.

subtlevtr duno if this helps but i did alot of bodywork smoothing with my old r5 turbo. Halfords sell ready mixed fibreglass, u jus have to mix it with the hardener supplied and ur ready to go. Its bout a tenner i tin and u get quite a bit. Rough the surface as much as u can before using it, and once u have used it, buy some ultra fine finishing filler, it will fill and holes in the fibreglass. use finer and finer sand paper till ur using wet and dry. Should look good mate

as the foglights are the same for all models, you could get some base model cover plates from the ones that dont have fogs.. then fill in the edges..
