over rev @ 70mph

  1. #1
hi, i have recently bought a saxo 1.1i, and took it on the motorway the other day for a test run, however when i hit 70ish it sounded like the engine was over revving, not massively, it was almost as if i would need to change up a gear is there was one!!! I am not really that bothered about it as I dont drive on the motorway for long periods often, however next month i have to go down south and will be on it for ages- does anyone else have a similar problem, should i be worried that the car is doing this as i dont want to cause myself big problems because it has been driven like this for long periods of time!
any opinons will be much appreciated

what rpm was it at while at 70mph??

i dont know, i have an older version that doesn't have an rpm meter, there is just a stupid clock in the way! it werent like massive over revin, bt it was like if i was drivin the car normally then the noise that the engine is making is a signal to change gear! cheers

well, if you have a mk1, i think they were made with 950cc, so it's pretty small engine. try sound damping the engine bay. i must admit i was thinkin of doing mine aswell.

but i like the sound of the engine, and i dont even have an exhaust.... yet

you can always turn up the radio

To be honest i think you will be fine as long as you dont push it far over 70mph. I used to have a 1.1 fiesta and that used to sound like it was reving far to high but i done a far bit of motorway driving and it was fine if i was you i would just make sure your oil and water is toped up before you go.

my 1.1 sometimes sounds like it is reving like mad when going 70 but i found when going a little faster it died down a bit... but then again my steering wheel shakes wen going more then 60

I used to think that of my 1.1 before and then I took it to Portugal on a trip and it never even bothered me! and motorway driving most of the way there at about 90 with not a lot of problems! Wicked little machine never let me down, was on the fast lane half of the way lol. Even managed to get it up to 115 a few times (although it was downhill)</font>

2 adam: you steering wheel could shake because of old tyres or bad tracking.

    2 c2_vtr: i get my 1.1 up to 160 km/h with no problems (that's 100 mph), and there's no weird behaviour

Adam - the shaking may just be down to the wheels not being perfectly balanced. nothing to worry aboute. my old VTR alloys used to cause the steering wheels to vibrate slightly at 70mph, but not if i went above it. now got my ew Oz wheels on - balanced a lot better & i don't get any shaking at all.

oh - and my ex girlfriends micra 1L used to sit at 85 on the motorways. had no problems. bound to be slightly noisy coz its only a small engine.

i got a 1.1i with a big jap exhaust. i tuk mine on the motorway last weekend, up to macnhester. was doin about 90, with no problems. couldn't hear the engine that much, but it wasnt soudnin like it was struggleing. just my ears hurt cuz of the loud noise from the exhaust.

maybe you cudnt hear the engine since u was going deff from the backbox

    lol @ Adam

Don't worry mate its fine to hear the engine! as long as you don't push it way too far! As I said I had mine doing quite a lot and to Portugal is 1500 miles or so and that was in a 30 hour period so that will do more damage than once in a while on motorway!
