Basically i have a head with newmans cams to go onto my vts.. It has have work done professional on the valves and seats, skimmed and been cleaned and repainted..

Basically i have a list of parts i need to buy, some i need and others i want to replace anyways, to have a nicely running engine..

I would really appreciate it if anyone could point me in the right direction of specific kinds of parts i should look into getting since the its been modified

    List of Bought parts
    Cam Belt
    Spark Plugs

    Need
    head gasket with bolts
    oil filter
    oil
    engine flush
    water pump
    sump gasket

Is there anything i have missed? anything i should replace really?I

went to price head gasket up and guy said there are 3 different thicknesses of gasket, he also said its £69.00 for gasket set but without head gasket itself but gasket following 37.99 plus 18.99 for head bolts..

Is this good price and what will i get with the 3 prices?

when the cams n co were fitted did you use some kind of lube so it doesnt start dry?

get a new tensioner and idle pully for when you fit the cambelt n co
in the head gasket kit is their a rockercover gasket etc or is the head complete?

well the cams are already in the head so how will i no if lube was put on before fitted?

got cam belt and tensioner. what you mean idle pulley? vernier pulley?

guy never said about what you get in the kit, ive to go back in on tue and hes going to ring and see what s included but i can remember him saying rocker gaskets were included in the kit

and the head aint got no covers on, ive bought a set of polished cam covers of a guy on here, but the gasket kit comes with the rocker gaskets but still tho, do you reckon the prices above are worth it all adding up to nearly 130 quid for bolts, gasket kit and head gasket itself?

the last vtr engine i rebuilt cost me around 60 quid for gaskets and bolts

the last vts engine was 75 iirc

thats trade prices tho and good parts..

probs lookign at around 120 retail prices, if you can try and get genuine citroen parts and i ment the idle pulley lol since a camblet change its best to replace idle and tensioner and if you want the pump (which i do anyways)

so the covers aint on so you can see the cams? do they look oily?

tbh im not sure what idle pulley is, not doing this myself tho so i dont no. already bought a water pump aswell!!

ill have a look at the cams and get back to you if they look oily but i always thought they are sent to you oily anyways, newmans are anywasy so be hard to tell if its the oil from when they were sent or lube thats been used when put in

if they got any kinda oil on them gaz then they ok
  10. #10
right ok, well ive thats cams sorted, my main querie is what i will get in the gasket kit and what i need etc that i havent mentioned above
  11. #11
if you get kit you should get all gaskets plus tensioner. no bolts though they extra
  12. #12
gasket kits vary depending on who the maker is.. some you get rockers in some you dont...

yes newmans to and a rebuilt engine needs a good lube / fresh oil just so its not metal to metal for a few seconds and cause damage, so if its oily etc then your fine just get the covers on asap and cover the area up till then so nout bad gets in

i was gona say a torque wrench to tighten it all up but if a garage is doing it never mind

if you look at the side of the engine you will see various pulleys water pump tensioner idle etc etc

also make sure before starting up the engine they rotate it 20-30 times by hand (if they have never delt with brand new cams) to make sure it spins freely.. spark plugs out to be easier

other then that i cant think of much mroe you need tbh

i have got the parts listed below

    water pump
    coil pack
    spark plugs
    oil
    oil filter
    engine flush
    cam belt and tentioner

i just need to sort out all the gaskets(seals) as it has an oil leak somewere as we speak so when the head is off, i want EVERYTHING replaced so i can simply say that its guna run smooth with all parts changed

Have i missed anything to replace?

and how many gaskets are on the engine?

    sump
    head gasket
    rocker gaskets?
  14. #14
think its the middle gasket that normally leaks erm is it the cam housing 1
  15. #15
not sure, that why im asking how many gaskets and seals i can replace when head is off
  16. #16
    sump (take off sump)

head gasket (between block and head)

    rocket (under cam covers)

then things like thermostat gasket/seal, inlet etc

then all things connected to a cam belt, water pump idle, tensioner etc

replace fan belt for the sake for 3 quid

    pretty much it
  17. #17
got all of that sorted already, was just the gaskets i was unsure about but hopefully i will get rocker gasket, head gasket, inlet and outlet gaskets, and ill purchase some sealant or what for sump then should pretty much be it i reckon

    water pump is £33 posted

Thanks Aid, I've replied to your PM and will get you prices as soon as i'm back to normal after holiday and easter bank holiday!

I wouldnt go with ebay simply because of the varying quality of products...

For instance my brother got a gasket off ebay, cheap one, lasted all of 500miles. Which meant buying another gasket and another set of head bolts + hassle, time and effort.
