Engine revving itself

Anyone had this sort of problem on a Saxo.

Car has been sitting in the garage for a couple of months, but took it out for a run today. Drove about 10 miles and stopped at a junction, everything seemed fine, but then the engine started revving all on it's own. Not high revs, about 1500 to 2000, like I was sitting there blipping the throttle.
Switched the car off and restarted, idled no problem, but as soon as I touched the throttle it started again.
On the way home I gave it a bit of a clear out, ok thrashing and by the time I got home, approx 15 miles, the problem had disappeared.

    Any ideas?

Could have been accelerator pedal being a bit sticky if you hadn't driven it for a few months, and once you used it it unstuck and went back to normal.

    could be either:

    Idle Control Valve?

    coolant temperature sensor?

MAP sensor on the inlet manifold but you can never tell

Could be the idle control valve, theyre only about 15-25 quid new i think.

I had this before though, turned out it was just a badd battery connection that i hadnt clamped on properly. Mine was revving its tats off though, which was really embaressing

Mrs had this on her corsa and it was the idle control valve.

    Del

    idle controle sensor i vote

if its fine when you turn it off and switch back on after a few seconds theirs not much more it could be..

when you do tho. does it idle at the usual 800rpm after the choke.. or was the engine still cold and it idled at 1000 ?

try Idle control valve as 3 of us have mentioned it - lol
  8. #8
We may all just be stupid

If it stopped, probably was a sticky accelerator cable, had to change one before as car revved itself, bloke said it had been in a garage for a while and only started once he started drivivng it again, might be worth a shout, will be cheaper than an idle control valve too.

i know im stupid - lol

Could just stick some wd40 on the cable would probs stop it sticking.

idle control valve, changed mine solved it.

mine revs itself, funny as i think
  13. #13
could also be the stepper motor, try a washer in it

Thanks guys. Will keep an eye on it. Don't think it's the cable, so the idler valve may be the fault. I had to jump start the car in the first place as it had gone flat with lying in the garage. Don't know if that would have made any difference.

    Stepper motor???? Where's that?
  16. #16
would have looked at it if you were through in inverness mate, sounds like the stepper motor not the idle control valve, but would really have to see it first!
  17. #17
basically an electric motor without a commutator, its just beside the throttle body, black box

I was in Elgin when it started, Halfords car park to be exact. Is there an easy check that can be done at home or should I leave it until it does it again.

I have excatly the same problem, sometime it revs with clutch down, and sometime when not in gear and when i press accellerator

i got a diagnostic, and it was the stepper motor, i'm now looking for one, but they're difficult to find!!

this may seem really really stupid but mine done this before i replaced a few things and when i put a new air filter on it stopped. thought this was weird so i put the old one bak on jus to check and it started revving itself again.

    ICV most likley

I had this problem too, shitroen ended up changing the stepper motor, along with some sensors. This diddnt get rid of the revving, so next they changed the air intake box and ive never had a problem since.
  23. #23
My vtr does the exact same thing! Usually when ive driven a far distance. Is it sumthing 2 worry bout?
  24. #24
Problem solved, Gotta new stepper motor for a tenner and fixed =)

Mines done this before but it seemed to have sorted itself until 2day when it was being an utter beeyotch!

Had a new battery in 2day and after a reasonable drive it started doing it constantly. Coming up to for example traffic lights, with the clutch disengaged the revs would blip between about 1200-1800 rpm then as it came to a complete stop it would idle at 2000.

Took it straight back to the garage and they are looking over it now. When I have an answer I'll be sure to pass it on
