save your money and buy a second hand set of 266mm Pug 206 calipers/discs and pads for £100. Make a huge difference, much more than red dot disks would give.

if you cant get 266 or 283's then svae your money and get standard discs for now. i used 20 groove reddot's and hated them, moved on to brembo max discs which were slightly better. now use 206 gti 180 calipers and plain discs with m1144 pads.

agreed ! mintex Hmmmmmm put them on my old car -im not a mental driver and when i put shiney bits on the car i stick to manufactures guide lines - and after dout 250miles i noticed them sqealing (i used copper gease and cleaned before i put them on) long story short coast me nearly £200 to change all the disks and pads the amazing mintex pads were glazed and also rendered my disk knackered -and i can get them for about £14 for the freelander (not ebay) so i suppose you get what you pay for !!!!!

wouldnt put them back on any of my cars !!!!!

sorry for the length, rant and hijack !!

thats your opinion then every set of mintex pads and discs have always been ok on my saxo

for all round they cost about 100 quid, not exactly cheap
  11. #11
exactly im half that for a car that weighs 2x as heavy for the same pads !!!!!!! and it is my opinion a break change on a disco is a good 8-9 hrs !!

Cheapest isnt always best , but neither is the dearest !!!

i use mintex 1144 on the front and standard mintex on the rear, and also use standard discs all round. yes mine do squeel a bit but thats due to the compound but they are a very good pad in my opinion.

    Squeal = lol
  14. #14
    whats up with you??
  15. #15
put a champher (sp) on the leading edge of the pad material and should get rid of most of the squealing (providing the calipers all free and slidey)

    who me !???

the thing thats up with me is i personally hate my car making any noise esp ear piercing, migrane inducing break noise or any noise like it gets fixed - freelander needs new disks cause there fekked and pads are glazing the disks when ive got the cash its getting done for that reason its sitting off the road !!!!!!

ive used loads of different manufactures in the break dept had good and bad as am sure most of us have and the worst for me is mintex as said earlier in the post they wrecked disks on my disco.

not sure what has been said already but when it comes to choosing Brake Disks you really need to consider your driving and much you're willing to go into the 'maintenance'

Flats are Ok for general purpose use and durability but if you want to take braking performance to the 'next' level then you might want to consider drilled or grooved

Grooved are probably your best bet in terms of braking performance and durability. The grooves act as a 'knife' which continually cleans the pad surface therefore maintaining an optimum pad/disk brake friction coefficient. They can also be used with all brake pads and have a longer life than drilled disks

Drilled tend to be lighter than grooved so are good from a track day point of view or if you're keen to lower your unsprung mass. They have better 'bite' and have the highest theoretical braking effect due to the drilled holes and the cutting behaviour on the disk. However they aren't that durable (tend to get cracks around the holes if care isnt taking during initial use)

they make a big diffrnce, iv got a full set of braded hoses, full set of groved and drilled discks with MINTEX pads and i changed the brake fluid to a higher speck, a standerd speck brake fluid like dot 3 will boil under heavy breaking making the brakes fail, i went for dot 5 (race speck)
