Fitting Driveshaft help?

  1. #1
    Hey up.

Theres been quite alot of rattling recently coming from both front sides of the car. Booked it in for today for my local garage to have a look at, and eventually they've told me i need a offside driveshaft.

I need the car for when i start placement on Monday, but fat chance of getting a garage do it now, as they're fully booked, and I dont trust any other garages in the area. Plus i'm on a really tight budget.

So, im gonna source and fit the driveshaft myself, with the help of a mate. But, before i go on my mission, just wondering if anyone knew the answers to these questions?? (worth a shot lol)

    * How long does it take to take the old one off, then put the new one on?
    * Problems you came across?
    * Where is the best place to get one from?
    * What tools did you use?

Now, the garage have told me the drivers side driveshaft needs replacing, but the original knocking noise came from the nearside (passenger) side?? As well as the drivers side, and I was under the impression that you cant change one driveshaft, without changing the other? Is that correct?

Any help and advice muchly appreciated!
    Rep will be given!

well i think ther quite straight forwards as when we lowerd my car we pulled both driveshafts out by accident and they pushed right back in as there held in and on by your strut have a look in haynes manual but i would say you will need to take your strut off best i can do really as i havnt really had a look also make sure you catch the oil when you pull it out

I would say roughly it takes about 20-30mins to do.

The only problem which i think you may come across is that sometimes when you take the bolt out of the bottom ball joint you may have to lever the arm down to get the ball joint out of the hub/knuckle, if its tight, you may need to bang a screwdriver or chisel etc into the slot where the bottom ball joint went to open it up, making it easier to come out.

For the tools, you will need two spanners, i think either 16/17mm, a wheel wrench bar, with either 30 or 32mm socket (cant quite remember) and a centre drive shaft nut. Maybe a hammer and screwdriver.

And as far as i know you can change which ever drive shaft you want it shouldn't matter mate.

    Hope that helps.

is a good idea to get gearbox oil as i lost quite a bit on mine.

its a 32mm nut inthe centre of the hub whihc needs undoing.

on a vts there is a small bracket that need loosneing to take it off. and as saxo 908 says it should just fall out.

mine did when i changed mine

jack it up, wheel off, 30mm nut that holds the shaft in the hub, bottom ball joint pinch bolt if original will be 16mm nut ant 17mm bolt. bar the lower arm down till the ball joint comes out of the hub/strut. undo the two 11mm locking pin/hockey sticks on the intermidiate bearing, put something under gear box to catch the old oil and then pull the shaft out. re fit in reverse order and dont forget to top your gear oil back up.
any prob's give me a call and i'll talk you through it 07813441969.

Nice one mate, simpler version but everything is there!

Got the original driveshaft out no probs, just i've been given a VTR driveshaft (i think) and the garage told me it was only the drivers side, but the passenger side is also fucked, so busy day today!

if you jack the side of the car up high enough then you shudnt lose any gearbox oil, thats what i done last week and no oil came out at all m8

Had to replace both driveshafts (well, waiting on em now), so i've already lost plenty of oil!

I managed to snap two driveshafts this week now i know how to do them will def be doing them myself in future. If you have managed to snap one make sure you replace other at same time, my other 1 went on way home from having first 1 fixed grr.

    Cheers for the help guys.

Fitted both new driveshafts, as the garage said it was just the drivers side, but while i was under the car, it was apparent the passenger side was fooked too - oil has pissed everywhere! Not bad for £150, drivehsafts at £70 a pop then transmission fluid was £10. Is abit awkward, but worthwhile doing yourself!

Did'nt see the thread else I would!

Hardest thing IMO is getting the driveshaft nut off as they can be tight as FOOK....

    Haha no worries!

Yeah they are solid! Had get me ol' man do that part, just ain't strong enough!! LOL. Or getting the wishbone out of the balljoint? Thats a pain in the arse!

Ball joint splitter is handy for that, just have to be careful you dont split the gaitor. My hub nut needed burning off, it was stuck solid mate, lol!
