HG Failure

    Alright all,

Is this a sign of head gasket failure?

Driving along and the engine started to make a loud rattle like noise, then cut out. Now it wont even turn over.

Loads of oil all over the sump as well. 94k miles, 1.4 Furio

    Thanks Matt

No, i wouldnt have thought so mate!

Even if the headgasket had blown it should still turn over, and also, it wouldnt make a knocking noise!!

The only real signs of HG failure is a loss of power and it will start to use water.

Unless, the headgasket has split between the waterways and bores, in which case the water will mix with the oil, causing seizure of something in the engine i.e. main bearings.

It sounds like it could be time for a new engine mate! Especially if it has seized and wont even turn over.

Thought as much. So in the morning should I check water levels? What else should I look for?

    Thanks

Take off the oil filler cap and see if its all gunked up.

    Check the oil level

    Check the water level

So when you say ot wont turn over, you mean it has seized solid? Or its just wont start?

Its not starting, or its not turning over??

When you turn the key does it splutter and cough, or is it just silent and does nothing??

Well if the starter motor cant turn it over i'll be damned if you can!

Sounds like your gonna have to source a new engine buddy.

Now is the time to go VTR or maybe even VTS?
