Clunking Noise

  1. #1
    Hey

I seem to get a clunking noise when driving my VTR. I dont think its gearbox or clutch related because when I dip the clutch and coast, the noise doesnt go away, neither does it go away when not in gear.

However if I brake a little, the noise dissapears for about 10 seconds and then slowly creeps back again. My spacial awareness is rubbish and I cant figure out if its coming from the front or the back though!!

I had something like that recently, happened mainly when i pulled away and braked. It kept on getting worse and worse... turned out id not tightened my wheel nuts up enough they were all hand loose!

Or it could be driveshafts or CV joints

It could be anything brake/steering or suspension related, go through the usual jack it up and check for any play or loose bolts, K Buddy!!

sounds like suspension/steering although it could be driveshafts mate

Hmmm well its currently in the garage having a service with brake pad change, I asked them to have a drive of it to see what it could be so hopefully they'll figure it out.

    Wose case scenario, driveshafts?

could be the front ball joints dose it happen more when you turn, if so ist probably that, if it is it wont be much to fix couple of hundred to get 2 brand new ones and fit them

Hmmm I havent really noticed it when turning...however whenever I pull into my driveway the car makes a strange pinging sound that I need to diagnose as well

    Update on this!

After having my full service done, the car now no longer makes this clunking noise! I think it must have been brake related but havent got a clue what it could have been, all I know is that its now fixed :-)

oh right. my car makes the pinking noise. normally at slow speeds, pulling away or stationary...makes sorta like a crunching noise as you turn the steering wheel...

Driveshafts, does it sound like a squeeky floorboard?

no. its a crunch when you turn the steering wheel about 30 degrees either way...noise is gradually getting louder on mine now

i'm just concerned as you can see the road wheel judder as it crunches...going to try taking it to kwik fit tomorrow i think see what they can find

This sounds like it could be steering rack problems!!! worth a thought!!

well i took my car to formula one today and they said it seems to be coming from the UJ on the steering where it does through the bulk head. theres apparently a ball and it pops out of its housing thus causing it to clunk. has anybody had this before???
  18. #18
mine done this...can you feel the clunking?? if so...it could be:
    - Droplink
    - Snapped ball joint

can feel it from the road wheel but not the steering wheel. Can hear it really loudly from inside and outside the car. Adam did it knock on corners and stuff?

    cheers
