gear box trouble

  1. #1
Hello again guys, You may remember me last week saying that my gear box makes a banging sound when selecting 2nd gear and feels pretty loose and slack.
Well my cars currently at the garage now and the mercanic just told me the problem is due to having hardly any oil left in the gear box and its noisy so is better to get a new gear box soon! Ive asked him to put more oil in to see if it makes a difference but won't know till I pick it up later but does that sound right or is this guy trying to get a big job from me? The gears feel fine apart from the second gear problem!

    any help is appreciated Thanks

Sorry ment to say knocking sound rather than banging sound! thanks

if it had no oil in it you'd find it quite hard to get into gear, you may also begin to hear the diff whining. Have the gear linkages been checked, the metal linkage rods and the rubber mount?

    as said above...check the linkages!!

it sounds to me like the rubber mount on your gear linkage rod has perished and the rod is being pushed in and out of place which would explain the slack feeling when trying to select 2nd and also the knocking noise.

If you look straight down the back of your engine bay just to the left of the air box, you will see 3 rods - 1 long and 2 short.

Gently give them a wiggle to see if there is any movement/play in them, if they feel loose/wobbly then the rubber washer/mount has most probably perished.

On the other hand the rod could have cracked/split which would result in the same thing.

Either way its easier to replace the whole rod not jsut the mount and will cost around £12 from Citroen.

Hope its that rather than an actual gearbox problem as its alot easier to fix.

good luck with it fella and let us know how it feels when you pick it up!!

Hi mate, It's only hard sometimes to put it in reverse. I really thought it would just be the linkages as I've only had the car for about a month and there's no record of them being changed atall but I'll ask the guy at the garage when i pick the car up if he thinks its worth changing the gear linkages. also it does make a whine sound when driving ( sounds like a old bus lol )

Alright Nice one mate I'll have a look when i get it back. cheers

Like Sean said the whining noise will be being made by the diff.

the reason it's sometimes hard is probably because the rod is being pushed in and out of place.

like i said have a look and let us know how it feels when you get it back tonight

Alright Guys, When i got the car back the gear box feels a bit more slicker but thats about it. Ive just checked these rods anyway and the small 2 feel stiff but the big one moves a little when wiggling it so does that sound normal or is a new one needed?

Oh Yeah also the mercanic said the reason why he thinks the gearbox is on its way out is because there is brown iron looking residue in the water bottle but the car is overdue a service so might just be because of that.

since when did the cooling system have anything to do with the gearbox? Only small metal filings you'll find in the gearbox are when you take the oil filler plug out, even then they'll be minimal. Your mechanic sounds like he has special needs, i'd take the car somewhere else and get a second opinion.

HA HA Thats what i was thinking yesterday, the guy just seems lazy like he cant be arsed doing any work lol. Does anyone know any GOOD garages around the Birchwood area of Warrington?

for garages in your area it may be best to post a thread asking this in the regional sectional of the site mate click me

Oh right nice one this forum is all new to me so you'll have to bare with me mate.

I don't suppose you know anything about gear linkages do you whilst your here?
I'm just wanting to know if the big rod should have any play in it whatsoever?

a little but not much, if the rubber ball on the main linkage goes then you will be able to move the gearstick side to side a lot more, the part is £35 from citroen and takes about 20 minutes to fit. From what your mechanic is saying i'm not convinced the gearbox is gone.

Ok thanks I think i'll just get it changed anyway and see how it goes from there but is it best changing all of them at once do you think or will it be fine just doing the one?
