Do I really need uprated springs for cam?

Guys, good chance of getting a piper 285 cam for a 2002 vtr with pulley

I know people have mentioned changing the springs on the 2002 with mk1 springs.

is this really necessary though. I know people say 'while youre there', but the motorsport company I have got a fitting price for say there are 2 ways.

    1. change just the cam, pulley, gaskets, cam belt, headbolts, time it and map it. fitting: £150

    2. change cam, pulley, springs, gaskets, cam belt, headbolts, time it and map it. fitting: £250-300 - plus all the extra parts needed

Now, if i don't change springs etc, will the engine blow up or cause long-term damage. I NEVER hit the redline, saying that, I've never been higher than 5k revs. 44k on the clock and serviced well.

If I defo need them, I'm 50/50 considering not doing it at all as trying to save up for evo 8 at moment, so would add to that fund. As camming will add about 12-14 hp, trying to outwweigh the value for money..

If I might not need them, I won't think twice.

    cheers in advance

why spend money on vtr when you are saving to buy an evo
i would leave it alone as your not keeping it

Well, I'm not gonna save fpr the evo for like another 6-8 months, so it was just for a bit of fun really.

But you're right, even if it came down to getting the evo a month earlier by not camming the vtr, then it's defo worth doing.

    cheers guys

Definatley change valve springs, the later VTR's have soft springs and as your going for a high lift cam springs are especially important, you will be redlining it as I bet the powerband is all up there...

If you dont drive above 5k.. your not really driving the car are you.. why do you need the extra power?

Leave it as it is.. by a faster car.. after all.. a cammed VTR will still be slower than a VTS..

no it bloody wont cos mine certainly aint!

if you dont drive above 5k i wouldnt bother with a 285 mate simply cos the 285 wont even be making full poweer till up near the 6k mark

and unless you drive hardish you wont get the most out of it really

but if you do go for it you DO NEED to change the valve springs which are about £80 for the full set from piper if i recal

you will be pushing 125+bhp though if you already have a decent manifold, system and intake once its all mapped
