i bought a 1.4 106 XSI gearbox today and i told the chap i bought it of i was puttin it in my VTS. he said i will have to remove and alter something so that my speedo will connect properly.

is this true? if so what will i have to do so that my speedo will work correctly

The speedo on early MA boxes runs via a cable which spins and links the speedo drive directly to the back of the clocks. Around 1994 they changed to electric speedo drive which sends a pulsed signal to the ecu and clocks. The speedo drive works off a plastic worm drive on the diff this spins either the cable or the electric pickup, which sends the signal to the clocks.
You can simply unbolt the cable drive and fit an electric pickup. There are different numbers of teeth on different pickups and rings, my xsi box worked ok though.

basically all your sayng is replace the cable drive and fit it with an electronic pickup? where can i get an electric pickup from and is it dificult to fit?

Take the electric pickup off your current gearbox, it is a straight swap. I have fitted cable drive to VTS boxes and electric drive to old boxes.

Just one bolt and a rubber seal holding them in, they pull out easily usually.
