Modifying/increasing performance of diesel engines

   As above. Anybody know how you can get more power/performance out of diesels?

   remap is the easiest and most cost effective method of extracting my jungle juice from a Turb-derv

   Straight through exhaust, panel filter & Remap
   My m8's got a Pug 206 Hdi 1.4 & with this done shes at 100bhp which isnt bad when you consider ther only about 60Bhp Standard.

   surely a straight through exhaust would make it sound like a tractor?

   Nope hopefully (if all goes to plan) It will be a merc c220 cdi engine (there was a thread in genral chat about it somewhere)

   well then yea like most said, remap best option, filter, not sure on exhaust as it will be black smoke glor!

    you can only remap cars with an ecu, divvies lol
    
    diesels are similar to petrols, you can fit uprated camshafts, uprated exhaust systems etc etc.
    
    A mechanical injection system you can just turn the fuel pump up and that will chuck more fuel in, but if you can't get it to burn efficiently then it may lose power.
    
    The black smoke is because you have to inject more diesel than for optimum burn to get a bigger explosion, to get the turbo to spin up, to burn the extra fuel that you're chucking in, so you get black smoke till the turbo is up to speed.
    
    As with any turbo car, decat(s) and free flowing exhaust systems give great gains, and contrary to what people think a diesel performance exhaust will sound just like a petrol exhaust note. Note than on cars with variable vane turbos running high boost(most modern high pressure injection cars) removing the cat can make the turbo spin far too fast and blow it up VERY quick. They have no wastegate to control boost unlike petrol cars, the fuelling controls boost, chuck more fuel in to make more boost.
    
    There's a guy on briskoda getting over 260bhp out of his 1.9 tdi PD engine, with more torque than most supercars.

    the chap that is getting the 260bhp has spent alot of money on the fabia VRS. if its that one IIRC.
    
    derv turbos as standard run very "lean", when a remap is done, all it does is crank up the pressure in the injector rails, thus creating a bigger bang, more boost, more power and torque.
    
    iam unsure on the "no wastegate" to control boost, never heard of that.
    
    as with any forced induction car.
    
    1. get the breathing sorted and as efficient as possible
    2. decat and straight thru exhaust (dervs need no cat) as they only have to pass visible smoke test at MOT.
    3. fit a boost guage to see what the car is actually running in psi.
    4.find out the capabilities of engine, turbo and clutch etc.
    5. uprate the clutch for a jabbasport item.
    6. get it mapped properly and get the torque curve lessened so it isnt so hard on shafts, clutch and fly etc.
    
    you should have a pretty quick derv after this.
    
    p.s. if the fuel controls the boost then it sould never overboost, as the infectors will only put in a certain amount of fuel.
    
    IIRC the 1.9 VAG PD engine has an electronicly controlled actuator connected directly to the ecu which regulates boost.
    
    could be wrong though

    Right the car has been on the road for a while now, loving every minute of driving it (even though its a diesel automatic ) So I am starting to think about doing a few of these things now. Which is going to be the most cost effective (bearing in mind that its not as simple to do work on as a saxo)
