removing ste wheel & instrument panel guide

Have found a lot of useful info and advice on here so wanted to try and give something back. Before anyone says this is all in the haynes - yes it is, but the pictures are generally crap and the info is dispersed in diff sections. pics here show how straightforward the job is... and not everyone has the haynes!

ok - first off you need to remove airbag. Disconnect battery and leave for a good while (10 mins minimum) so airbag won't go off in your face. To get at two torx screws in rear of ste wheel you'll have to rotate it (so need key in ignition to release steering lock). when airbag is loose unclip wiring connector and carefully store it away upright. you want to return the steering wheel to straight ahead position now. Then you need to loosen the steering wheel bolt -but don't remove it. You first need to loosen the ste wheel - and it can require a bit of effort and cld come straight off in your face without the bolt to stop it. Once wheel's loose mark position to fit it back to. Then remove bolt and wheel.

Next undo two torx screws holding steering column shroud together and unclip bottom from top. remove two small screws holding the indicator switch in place and pull it out slightly to allow you to remove rotary unit that is part of airbag system. be careful to keep the switch in the neutral position throughout the job. also be very careful with the rotary unit -you want to keep it so that the two orange arrows at the bottom are aligned at all times (and it shifts position very easily). An orange wire runs from the unit to a connection below steering column - disconnect this and then remove the three torx bolts that hold the unit in place and carefully remove. Tape up the unit to keep the orange arrows aligned whilst out the car.

Three bolts hold the switch assembly to the steering column - remove these and you should be able to slide the indicator switch off and position it out the way. I was then able to carefully remove the rest of the assembly from the column without removing the wipers switch. You should now have access to the lower pair of torx screws holding the instrument pod surround. Then the two upper screws and remove the shroud. You now have access to the instrument pod, held in by three screws. prob best put a rag over column to prevent scratching the cover of pod as you need to tilt it forwards to get it out. When free you can get at two connectors at rear - these are held in by clips you push to the right to release (facing the pod).

Refitting is reversal - just make sure indicator switch is in neutral position and presses against lug on rotary unit. Torque setting for steering wheel is 30 nm. Don't have anyone sat in driver's seat when reconnecting battery just in case airbag blows up... unlikely if you've taken a bit of care but you never know!

Don't know how long pics will last - hopefully a while!

Thats a really good guide m8 could have done with that earlier i`ve just done the same job,the air bag screws are t25 & the steering wheel bolt is t5o,the column shroud ones are t20.Just thought I would add for reference.

    Cheers.

the ones on the back of the wheel, what size are they?
the tool i use is only just small enough to get in the hole so it creates ALOT of friction and is almost impossible to turn
    any ideas?

27 torx I'm pretty certain. Was a tight fit and screws were on quite tight. needed a little ratchet with extension to get screws loose (which don't come out - they just loosen). Be careful not to round any heads or you'll be screwed! Use your fingers when getting the head into the screws to make sure it has fitted properly.

Stevo67 has just given all the other sizes you need really

Will the 2 torx screws are t25(back of steering wheel holding airbag in)you need a long torx screwdriver to remove them.

piece of piss mate the hardest part is getting the 2 tork screws out from the airbag as its very fiddly, i used the haynes max power guide

why take the actual steering wheel off?? why not just undo the 2 bolts that hold the colum up?? much easier and less effort plus your airbag wont be touched.

what so theres a way of taking out the dials without removing the steering wheel?
  15. #15
    yea
take off the plastic bit below the wheel by un-doing the two torx
then if you look under where all the wires are theres 3 13mm bolts
undo them and the column should drop enough allowing you to get to them
i havent tried it, but i've had a look and can see the bolts as Predator did a guide on it somewhere
he put his dials in without taking the wheel off
