servicing

1st of all.. sorry if this is in the wrong section

im looking in to getting my car serviced.. only bought it 2 months ago, but i plan on keeping it for a couple of years, so maybe its best to have a service and make sure everythings in working order?

how much do you reckon it would cost from a local trusted garage, and what do they actually do on a service?

    phone them lol
  3. #3
    lol good point..

u reckon its worth doing though?

i just wanted a rough estimate of price and what they do before i phone tbh

do it yourself its ot hard to do, oil filter and new oil, fuel filter, airfilter, and new spark plugs,

thats all they will do most likely anyway
  5. #5
Yeah was gonna say just do it yourself, its not hard to do at all...
Obviously wont get a stamp in the book if you do it yourself but depends if you wanna keep the history up to date!

nah im not worried bout service history.. 10 year old car lol.. just plan on keeping it running smooth as plan on keeping it till i save up enough for a pretty good car in a few years.

do parts cost a lot to do it myself?
  7. #7
Well the parts cost around the same ammount as a garage would charge you.....but the labours free lol.

fair enough.. i mite do it my self then

anything else you reckon i should do other then: oil filter, new oil, fuel filter, airfilter, and new spark plugs?

I just did a service on a mk1 vtr, got all my parts from a motor factor called Exhausts Unlimited,

    5 litres of 10w/40 oil - £9.99
    Oil filter £ 6.99
    Fuel filter £6.99
    4 NGK spark plugs £7.96
    Alternator Belt £11
    Cambelt and tensioner £45
Anti roll bar drop links £20
    Total £107.93

Took me the best part of a day todo. But with the cambelt your looking at a garage charging in the region of £250 with parts

    £250 for a cam belt on a saxo! That's a bit much.

We only charge £80 plus parts, normally around £130 in total.
  11. #11
Yeah around the same up here, for a VTS cambelt i was quoted aorund £150 all in!!
  12. #12
ouch.. sounds like it could hurt the pocket if i take it to a garage lol

    give it a go myself!

cars not in bad running condition.. but would just like to keep it in good order

got my cambelt done for less than £100 i think lol!! i done a service on my old VTR a little while ago changed everything apart from cambelt (as it had already been done) cost me around £100 on parts and took me a few hours to do was done by the afternoon easy!

£250 for a full service including cam belt and usualy pads and discs
  15. #15
weres that my local garage said it would cost me £600 for all that?
  16. #16
thats why i ended up doing it myself lol
  17. #17

oh actual citroen garage.. thats prbs why.. dealers allways charge more lol

think ill give it a go myself.. not really engine minded, my dad knows a bit tho.. so i mite get him to help

is it a hard job for someone whos not greatly in the know?

pretty straight forward mate.. definately worth doing it yourself as its far cheaper...

just make sure when your putting the new spark plugs in, u screw them in with your hand first, then tighten with socket, but dont over tighten them.. this'll stop you cross-threading them.

let me know how u get on pal.

cheers for your help guys.. will be having a go throughout the week..

spark plugs were my big concern.. got a slight missfire and i know the plugs havnt been changed in ages, so i hope this is the cause of the problem

    its nothing major though
  23. #23
Good luck mate, dont rush and you'll get it done no problem

cheers rdc.. as i say my old mans picked up a fair bit about motors in his time, so im sure we'll get it done no worries.

gotta give out some rep for all your help guys
