Engine transplant

  1. #1
I have a Y-reg (3pin?) VTR at the moment. It is approaching 96k miles, so I have an idea for a transplant.

The the thing is I do not really want to go for a VTS swap due to many things, insurance, tax, insurance, parts, insurance etc

What I was thinking of doing is buying myself a lower mileage VTR engine and having a few bits and bobs done to it before dropping it in place.

I would just like to know whether firstly, this would be worth doing? And secondly, will it be cheaper than putting in a totally different engine to the one that my car was designed for?

    Any help/advice/prices much appreciated!

    Hello,

If you bought a farily low milaged VTR engine then yes in my opinion it would be worth doing, if your not wanting to pay the extra costs for a VTS engine then it really is your ownly option... However.... If you were to buy a 3 plug VTS engine then the swap would be quite stright forward and it would really be no different from fitting another VTR engine apart from a few bits here and there.

In my advice i would say save up and drop the S engine in there, i know this from experience as ive just had mine done . Do not believe there is much difference in the price of parts between an S & R. is only really insurance, tax and petrol depending on how you drive.

If you do want a VTR engine i know RCD performance on here have one which has covered around 56k, as this was my old engine before i had my conversion done.

    Hope that helps

in my opinion pointless dropping another vtr engine in, yours will see another 30k if looked after properly and serviced regularly.

Fair enough, but if I wanted to buy a new car I wouldn't have bothered asking about an engine swap!

I want to do it to firstly, keep the car, and just get the satisfaction out having something different!

    Along with my wheels

Def go for the VTS engine mate, you will never look back.

Ok granted it will work out more expensive on the insurance and tax, but hey you wouldnt drink CO-OP own coke if you could have the real coke would you?

I'm just undecided, slowly got the money creeping up for basically either what I would want.

The thing I'd like is just to have a tuned VTR engine, even if it is only as quick as a VTS, but it's a VTR. Weird idea lol

yes true, but it depends what way you look at it, i was in 2 minds like you are.

    1. the VTR starts off will less BHP so already your playing catch up

    2. You mentioned how you dont want to pay extra cost in insurance, having a VTR thats pushing out 150bhp will be expensive on insurance and how much is it going to set you back to get to 150 bhp? when you could just stick a vts lump in there, stick with that for a bit and then starting looking at more modifications.

Im not even sure if there is a right or wrong answer to this question, just opinions.

Obviously your well aware of what my opinion is, but if your heart is content on getting a VTR to push at 150bhp then go for it buddy

Any car from Y reg onwards pays tax costs according to its emissions.

a 150bhp vtr engine will be shit to drive compared to a vts lump with the same power
