Powerflex Engine Mount - excess vibration?

  1. #1
    Hi guys,

    hopefully someone can help me.

i just fitted a Powerflex Engine Mount (one of the gearbox) to my saxo as the old one had gone allowing a lot of movement on the engine. Putting the new mount on has certainly helped but there's still a little bit of vibration/movement on the engine. This is being passed down the exhaust and makes it chug a bit and also bit of vibration around the car. What i was wondering was whether this is a result of the Powerflex bush being a little stiffer than OEM or whether it means perhaps one of the other engine mounts needs replacing as well. Was thinking that maybe the excess engine movement has knackered one of the other engine mounts?

Anyone with a Powerflex experience anything similar? I've not been out in the car for a proper drive but will be doing soon.

    thanks

when i fitted my powerflex mount i just found that the steering wheel shook, perhaps you should inspect the others

    Same as ^

This vibration was only evident on a stationary idle.

the vibration is standard, your fitting a stiffer mount!

when you stiffen the lower mount the top mounts are still standard ie softer which makes them move more than usual best bet is to get the full set but the bad side to that theres loads of vibration i have done my lower engine mount and theres a bit of vibratiion there but its what you get used to

    cheers guys,

i've just got back from a drive out in it and suspect there's something more her than just the vibration you get from a stiffer mount. The car literally sounds like a scooby boxer engine at low revs and there is a LOT of vibration. I'll try replacing the other mounts but a mate has suggested that perhaps the car isn't running right, e.g. only on 3 cylinders?! The car certainly doesn't drive well at low revs but seems ok over about 3.5k rpm and 40+mph. So not sure if just engine vibration that makes it 'appear' to not run right or whether it literally is running rough. Just gonna check the spark plugs now, anyone suggest anything else to check? First thing i checked the other day was the cam belt and that's still there! lol.

    Cheers again.

PS. The car seems to tickover at a constant 1000rpm, not lumpy, etc.

check the coilpak connection and plugs because it sounds like its off a piston which makes em feel like a tractor lol also check the inlet manifold gasket it may be drawing too much air i which may make it run on 3 cylinders what car is yours vtr vts mk1 or 2 help me help you matey

Vibrations are normal, i had one on my vtr. Yours sounds like something else is wrong though, have you disrupted any wires when fitting it, could be lambda connection or an earth somewhere.

thanks again, mine is a mk1 99 VTR.

Just had the coilpack off trying to get the spark plugs out to take a look but haven't got correct size spark plug tool. Doh! Will get one tomorrow, anyone know which one/size i need? Also is ther anything specific to check on the coilpack if the spark plugs appear to be ok?

To give a bit more background to this, i was sat in traffic on my way home and the car was running fine. Then all of a sudden the engine started sounding like a scooby, gearknob shaking and car almost stalling. Really thought cam belt had gone. When i got home and had a look at the car I could see the engine was moving A LOT. I got under the car and could see the gearbox mount allowing tons of movement so removed it. In my hand i could move the centre piece of the mount quite easily so thought this was the cause of the issue. Fitted the new Powerflex one and now there is no movement on the gearbox mount but still a slight movement/vibration on the engine. Car still pretty much acts the same as before changing the mount. It does not seem to struggle to hold constant revs though which perhaps thought it would do if only running on 3 cylinders???

It seems odd to me that if the car suddenly developed an issue with its running that this would coincide with a knackered engine mount? From the point of the car starting to run badly to getting home was about 4 miles so perhaps in that time any excessive engine movement from the car running badly may have taken its toll on the gearbox mount????

Will see what the spark plugs show and take things from there i guess.

    thanks.

vibrations are standard your car should idle like that at 1000rpm anyway dunno whats making it sound lumpy though could be something to do with your coil pack, or take it to quickfit they will do a free diagnose and tell you whats up with it then you can fix it yourself!!
