Stop driving it & let an auto electrician have a look at it.Sorry I know this might be the expensive option but for piece of mind i`d leave it a sparky. In the mean time disconnect the battery.

sounds to me like your indicator relay is buggering up, go to your local garage and ask for one, im sure they can help you out.

    Hi,
I have exactly the same symptom - the indicator relay is clicking randomly, although the indicators themselves work completely fine. However, this was happening since i bought the car (only tonight) so i cant say i witnessed the smoke!! Does anyone know if this is definately the indicator relay (it does seem to be because it's randomness is affected by the use of the indicator stalk)?

Also, does anyone know where the relay is situated in the car and how to identify it? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

sounds like a relay problem mate

thing is if smoke is coming from the steering cowling then it might not be as the relay is in the fuse box on passenger side

I've just had a similar problem where the indicator stalk became extremely sensitive to movement, to the point where it would just click continuously.
For me though it wasn't the relay at fault (replaced it), but the bloody stalk itself, so just bought some off ebay for 20 quid. Dunno what went wrong with them and although i tried takking them apart it seemed easier in the end just to buy working ones.

As you have replaced the relay, I suppose you are the best person to ask to describe its whereabouts. Is it in the fusebox, if so which one? I am going to try the relay first and if that doesn’t sort it, I am going to search for some stalks!

yeah, just look in the glove compartment fusebox. Just above the fuses is the relay (mine grey with white text) in the center slot. If unsure then just put your finger on it and see if you feel it click.

Sorry for the noob question... but if it's not the relay itself what is it? and any tips on good places to buy them? cheers
