Smoothing Bonnet

  1. #1
Im in the process of smoothing my bonnet and have the piece cut out and ready to fit te gap. I cant get hold of a tig welder either so anyone have any ideas on how to secure it to the bonnet? would fiberglass or some really strong no more nails work

    no....

the only way is to weld it.

ok what type of weld would i need as it is aluminum and a mig welder is no good for welding aluminium to car bodys?

    think mig would be okay.

we racked our van out using a mig welder....

just make sure you disconnect the battery

cool so would i have to weld all the way around it or just spot welds here and there?

why not just buy this, already done, less hassle and no chance of cracking

just use a piece of mild steel to fill the gap !

    why are you using aluminium?

first off, your car body isnt aluminium, its mild steel, so MIG welding would be fine,

secondly, if you dont know what your doing, when you weld the piece in, welding generates a hell of alot of heat, welding all the way round the gap, without a jig, clamps etc the bonnet will be in no shape what so ever to be used, let alone shut.

if your going to do it, take the bonnet off the car, this way no risk of setting the car on fire

you do have to weld it mate, done 2 or three of them on my mk 2 saxo, but if you are going to smooth it, i would reccomend that you get bonnet pins or something similar.

i only say this because, twice in the last 6 months, only weeks after smoothing the bonnet off and not fitting pins, the bonnet has openend at speed and caused a LOT of damage, 2 new bonnets, 2 new windscreens, and 1 new roof later - lesson learnt and pins fitted!!

I now have a smoothed off one piece carbon bonnet, but i have still fitted pins just to be safe, a few other people who have smoothed a bonnet on a mark 2 have also had this problem i have heard.

Just some advice before you smooth it!!

i was thinking about these the other day, if you fit one but dont fit pins how do you open the bonnet?

on my bonnet i just pull the red lever on passengers side and lift the bonnet, removed the latch in the grill

    ooo it makes sense.
