burning smell

   there is a burning smell coming from my engine- it smells like plastic- i thought it may be a plastic bag, but now i know that it definately is not- and the smell is coming from a black rectange box (wide and thin)that sits in the middle of the engine bay.
   
   does anyone know what this is? will it be safe to drive?
