Which ecu?

  1. #1
Looking at fitting 708s to my mk1 vts and was wondering which ecu you guys would recommend for me.
I have done all the breathing mods (exhaust, manifold, enclosed filter) and would not be boosting/TB'ing in the near future
    Any help would be appreciated.

    The 'common' list are:

    KMS
    Omex
    DTA
    Emerald
    Possibly Megasquirt
RCD PnP ECU (almost ready for release I believe)

From looking at it myself, I've come to the conclusion that the factors that would affect my choice are:

    Cost of the ECU itself
The skill of the person mapping it
The potential resale of the ECU

IMO all of these would do a good job once mapped up properly, but I was looking at either the RCD PnP - due to the cost (once some results are achieved) or the DTA/Omex ECU for the resale aspect, and the location of 'good' mappers out there. But this isn't to say the others are any better or worse, as you can get various models of each with different features so is hard to compare like for like.

Plus I'm sure you'd get a cheaper cost if you buy the ECU from the place to map them etc.

Best bet is to speak to some people who have the above installed, and mappers to get some feedback before you jump in. Plus, there are more standalone ECU's out there, this is just a list of the 'common' ones off the top of my head, just a matter of making your own choice.

Fair enough, got a superchip on my old vtr and regreted that so I've learnt my lesson about jumpin' in don't worry, been looking at the KMS and the Omex mainly, cost isn't a major issue, although obviously there are limits and I'm pretty willing to travel so I'll have a butchers at tuning houses and see there recommendations
    Cheers fella!

GMC motorsport are highly recommended by people for fitting and mapping KMS - might be worth a gander at their website/phone them to get some prices.

If your 100% sure your not going any further why not just remap the standard one?

The chap who owns Chipwizards is highly regarded as being one of the best for saxos/106s. Think he charges in the region £450 but you will get very well set up motor at the end of it

Didn't realise that was a possibility! May go further but that would be years away if I did, would this achieve a similar result to changing the ecu? Guessing so from your post, anyone else done this?

The first Predator is on my Saxo, finished, and has done 1,500+miles with no problems.

This first batch are arriving this week. Bear it in mind

With a standalone ecu you may make more power as you can go alot further into it. Wayne has done quite a few 16v remaps, ive seen loads of different figures from 708s that hes done, ranging from 155bhp-165bhp.

My mate has a 106 gti with 708s and a remap, runs very, pulls like a bastard to 7800rpm and is fine on cold starts. Also it made 156bhp at the fly. For £450 what more could you ask for?

KMS are shit, omex 600 series is much better and will cope fine with every set-up available. You could get an standalone for the price of those 'standard ECU remaps', and then get it mapped and be far superior then something like chipwizards, and have the added bonus of the re-sale value

Where are the dyno before and after graphs you said you would get done months ago?

Omex 600 is the best ecu ever, and mappers love to use it so cheaper prices when you come around to getting that done aswell.

doubt you'll get an omex with wiring loom, fitted and mapped for less than double the price of a standard ecu remap? no problmes with having standard ecu remapped if your not going any further.

    How is KMS shit?

If you buy the wideband with it, it maps itself as it goes (Alright its not going to be 100%) Plus it comes with a 708 base map.

Also you could get a standalone for the price of a standard ecu map, but why spend extra if your not planning to go any further.

I have 708s with standard ecu remap, pulled 153 bhp, and runs spot on.

Correct me if im wrong on any of this, its only what ive been told.

it doesnt map itself, only maps to preset target values so still needs good mapper to map it./
  16. #16
thought it would be too good to be true, still would be better than no map i guess.

It's called O2 correction. It targets specific AFR's at specific rev ranges.

    Our ECU also does this.

I'll repeat that if you missed it, RCD?

Sorry mate i did miss it.

We did not get a before dyno, mainly because i was a pillock and sent the ECU that belonged to the car away, it got mixed up in the pile of ECU's

We however did get an *after* graph, which is posted in our section. The car made 136bhp & 118ft lb @ the flywheel if i remember correctly.

Good little debate going on here but the "predator" is sounding a good deal imo and not too bad a price either, although a remap of the standard one also makes sense, but then there is potential resale value, aarrgghh, why can't they make life easy, hehe!
